HUGE congrats to my friend @sarahforiowa on flipping Iowa’s 3rd District! From homecoming and mom stuff to parades and hanging out at yarn shops, I’ve loved getting to know Sarah over the years. She’s the real deal. She shows up, she listens, and she cares about Iowans. I couldn’t be more excited to have her as my new congresswoman. (Bonus … she’s a knitter, too.) 🧶 by @jengeigley

You guys. The next Governor of Iowa … @robsandia. (We did it.) Iowa is back. 🍕 by @jengeigley

Today 3/4 of the Geigley fam is voting for clean water, strong public schools, affordable healthcare, disability rights, women’s reproductive rights, immigrant rights and protections, equality for ALL and an Iowa where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

We love Iowa. We care about what happens here and we’re ready for change.

Get out and vote, Iowa. (And everywhere!) You know what to do. 💙 by @jengeigley

Did you know that having a felony conviction doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t vote in Iowa?

John didn’t know he was eligible to vote until recently. This week, I got to be there while he cast his ballot for the very first time. Now he’s helping other Iowans understand their voting rights, too.

In 2020, Executive Order 7 restored voting rights to many Iowans who have completed their felony sentences. But not everyone knows that, and there’s still a lot of confusion about who’s eligible and how to get started.

Know your rights. Ask questions. Help someone else understand theirs.

Every eligible voter deserves to have their voice heard.

Here’s what you need if you want to vote in the midterms.

Bring a valid ID (one of these):
Iowa Driver’s License
Iowa Non-Operator’s ID
U.S. Passport
U.S. Military ID or Veteran ID
Iowa Voter ID PIN card (sign it before you come)
Tribal ID

Plus proof of where you live, dated within the last 45 days, with your name and current address:
Residential lease
Utility bill (cell phone bills count)
Bank statement
Paycheck
Government check or other government document
Paper or on your phone, both work!

A registered voter from your precinct can vouch for you, so bring a friend or neighbor. (Let’s do this!)

I love Iowa. I love the people here. And I care about our future. This year has reminded me how much we can learn from each other when we show up, listen and get involved. There’s still so much worth fighting for.

Election day is almost here. Do your research, make a plan and use your voice. Your vote matters more than ever.

Iowa, we can do better. And I believe we will.

Wherever you live … let’s go. 🗳️

P.S. Iowans - this is one of our longest ballots yet. Research your Iowa Court of Appeals Judges, District Judges, Soil and Water Commissioner candidates, County Hospital Trustees … and please vote NO on Amendment 1. If you need resources for research, I am happy to help.

Trick-or-treating has no age limit. Neither does joy. (You’re never too old for Halloween magic.) 🎃 Also, Bowie painted / made his mask … it’s from Legend of Zelda. 🗡️ by @jengeigley

Bowie and I spent part of our Halloween volunteering at Treat Street! 🎃🐢🐈‍⬛

Hosted by The Hope Foundation/ @cupsofkindnessiowa and Adventures in Social Development, this sensory-friendly fall festival was created by special needs families, for special needs families.

There was trick-or-treating, crafts, games and sensory fun and it was all about making Halloween accessible, inclusive and fun (not scary!) for every kid. 🎃

We loved being part of such a meaningful community event! And … Bowie was interviewed by @who13news. Keep an eye out for him on the news tonight! by @jengeigley

Thriller and all my other favorite parts of Halloween on the Hill. So much talent, so much fun. 🎃🎃🎃 by @jengeigley

Halloween on the Hill! 🎃 One of my favorite Des Moines traditions. Sherman Hill goes ALL OUT for Halloween and I love it so much. (I can’t fit all the awesomeness into one post.) Historic houses, spooky decorations, costumes and all the creativity that goes into making this night so much fun. 👻

This is John, sharing his story. Yesterday, he voted for the very first time. But what he wants people to take away from his experience goes far beyond one election. Please take a few minutes to listen - his story is worth hearing.

Yesterday, I had the opportunity to meet John, hear his story, and be there as he voted for the very first time.

You might recognize John as the Des Moines barber who appeared in a Zach Nunn campaign ad and later shared a video saying … “I can’t even vote.”

As it turns out, John had misunderstood his voting rights. And now, after learning he was eligible to vote, he’s using his experience to help other Iowans with felony convictions better understand their rights, too.

In 2020, Iowa’s Executive Order 7 restored voting rights to many Iowans who have completed their felony sentences, giving people like John the opportunity to make their voices heard at the ballot box. But many people still don’t know their rights have been restored.

At an @everyonevotesiowa + @iowacreatorcorps event yesterday, community leaders Fannette Elliott and Ako Abdul-Samad joined us to offer support, share their knowledge and talk about the importance of civic engagement.

Not everyone knows where to start. Not everyone has someone to explain how government works, where to find accurate information, or how to navigate the voting process. And when people feel disconnected for long enough, they can start to believe their voices don’t matter. This is why voter education and community outreach are so important.

Huge thank you to John for sharing his story and wanting to help others in our community.

I’ll be sharing a video of John telling his story in the next post and I hope you’ll take a few minutes to listen.

Lotus just finished knitting her SECOND sweater ever and it’s totally perfect. 🫐 She calls it her blueberry sweater, but it’s actually the Alma Sweater by @kisskiss.rhinestones. I’m obsessed with how it turned out. (Maybe she’ll let me borrow it?) And yes, I’m a very proud knitting mom. by @jengeigley
