I had to say farewell to my beloved Lou last week. When I found her in a gutter in Logan Square in 2003, I had no idea we were embarking on a journey that would last 22 years. She was a total survivor, living to be 104 in human years, still eating, purring, making me laugh and enjoying affection to her last day.

Louise was with me through five different apartments, two different states, five presidential elections, and two major breakups. The ritual of caring for her helped me get through so many dark times. Her peaceful little sleeping form made every house I lived in a home.

This small shy cat won a serious fan army. Her sweetness converted several confirmed cat dislikers. She lived with many of my family members and was adored by all of my friends. So many of you gave her love and affection that I will be forever grateful for! People in four different states cried for her loss when she died. She has been my sidekick, my mascot, my familiar, my daemon, a true companion. Our connection has been one of my life’s most consistent and precious experiences.

I’m so lucky Lou had such an extraordinarily long life—and still, I wish she were with me now. I long for her quiet presence; my heart aches for her and probably always will. There’s no love like the love we feel for animals, and no pain quite like the grief we feel when we lose them. Still, I’m so glad fate brought her to me on that Chicago street all those years ago, and so grateful to the village who helped me love her and take care of her all these years, especially my parents, Paul, Molly, Glenn, and Eric.

Goodbye, my sweet girl. You are one of the great loves of my life. I really hope there’s an afterlife full of chicken, cheese, prosciutto and sunbeams, where you feel safe, warm, fed, petted and deeply loved. by @jenniferruth

Did you guys know that Bikram Yoga is the one true yoga?? Guess you’d have to join the cult to find out.

Today’s NEW EPISODE features the wonderful Jennifer Boeder @jenniferruth as she recalls her time spent in Bikram Yoga. Bikram Choudhury is one of the more well-known yoga cult leaders, and Jennifer was one of his students before he fled the country. She recalls his abuse and ineptitude with humor and strength. The slides are a great visual to help shape the world she paints in the episode. Which is hundreds of sweaty bodies trapped on a nasty wet carpet, “soothing” fluorescent lights, all in a windowless former used car dealership in Los Angeles, CA for months. Welcome to the dark side of “enlightenment”. This cult leader is one of the worst. A total scumbag preying on young women, and he’s still out there somehow. Welcome to the wildly infuriating world of cults. by @jenniferruth

Made it to the Lake Michigan ledge for some spring cold water exposure! Such a lovely group of Chicagoans gather Friday and Sunday mornings for coffee, snacks and jumping into the lake, I can’t recommend it enough for both the community, the pain relief of a huge ice bath and the endorphins jumping in gives you! @lake_michigami_mermaids @danielt.oc
