“Intended to Be Read by the Archives” Short film by @billycolelanders BROAD CHANNEL, NY. On April 20, 2024, I brought my collection back to Broad Channel, where it all started. Where wildlife and civilisation converge, where horseshoe crabs go to wither. Video - Billy (@billycolelanders) Talents - Sol (@that_sol), Juno (@juno_likethesynth), Miko (@mikotl), Quoc-Huy (huyisoffline) Casting Director - Via (@viaace) Production Assistants - Daphnie (@daphnie_yy), Sarah (@sarah.abdellatif.ch) Collection Assistant - Triết (@trietvo2406) Location scout - Zach (@zachwassef) by @jerome__cheung
“Rubble” Ingredients - plaster, medical gauze, silk organza, stones, Chinese ink, sawdust, charcoal, silamide thread, paper “Successful memorials leave imprints, and change.” Very heavy textile experiment with stones sewn within the layers of gauze that fall out slowly to leave imprints and softens as the body moves through it. It is my response to the genocide in Gaza and the agony I felt seeing centuries-old buildings decimated in seconds. This material was designed in Dec 2023, the skirt in the second slide executed in early Apr 2024, and as I write this in late May 2024, a day following the tent massacre, I feel like this is no longer an accurate representation of how I would respond to the genocide in Gaza. It is so much worse. I often struggled with the development of this collection because it felt meaningless in the grand scheme of things but using these garments as a personal response to real world events gave me a little bit of solace and willpower to continue. Intended to Be Read by the Archives. A quote by Jonathan Leith extracted from my research, given to me during a class with @tedkerr - “How do you create something beautiful when all you feel is anger and decay?” A guiding question throughout the year. Here’s another one: How do we actively memorialise during a genocide? Taken from look 4 - Léo wears my monument vest. 50% linen, 50% concrete. The concrete-coated vest has snap closures both front and back, and is strengthened with sand I collected at Rockaway Beach. One year later - I created my thesis collection as a transcription, physical archive of the moment in history when it was made, and my thoughts on it. From October 2023 onwards all sorts of genocidal violence and destruction and mystery body parts plagued my phone screen and to this day it has not stopped. So, as I was doing research and creating my collection it only felt fair to dedicate at least one look to the devastation I felt daily, feeling powerless unless my ability to create was power in itself. The textile of this skirt from my thesis collection was designed the same week I saw images of the oldest mosque in Gaza (est. 7th century) reduced to rubble. It is made of plaster, medical gauze, silk organza, stones, Chinese ink, sawdust, charcoal, silamide thread, and paper. When the wearer walks, a cloud of plaster dust trails in the air before it settles on the ground. The stones are held loosely by the gauze, and over time they fall out, leaving only traces in the loosened weave of the gauze where the stones used to hang. Obviously this is now super outdated but it still serves as a personal time capsule of Dec 2023.
