Meet the @neotropolisevent 2026 Costume Contest Judges!

Here's a little background on the folks judging this year's Neotropolis Costume Contest. They pick their judges from the people who always bring their absolute A-game to the event. They've either placed in the contest in the past, or they're highly respected members of the @neotropolisevent or @wastelandweekend costuming community.

@violettevalkyria is a Canadian artist who has been making costumes, props, and art installations for over 10 years. While she has experience with a wide range of mediums, the rise of 3D printers has allowed her to combine her 20 years of professional experience in the game industry with her passion for costume making and really push the limits of what people expect from 3D printed pieces.

Jessiah Ruiz @strike.works is a talented cosplayer, metalworker, Gymnast game developer and entrepeneur. He enjoys taking on projects that allow him to incorporate striking techniques and technologies.

Auriol Steelis @aerial_cosplay is a creative designer and customer with over 25 years of experience. She has been sewing for most of her life and works in a variety of mediums. She enjoys taking on challenging projects and learning new skills. Her work showcases an eye for detail and functional design.

Jesse Gee @jessegeearts is an LA artist, originally from New Mexico. For 25 years he's been creating monsters, puppets, Props and costumes for films, television and theme parks. He creates his own costumes and personal art by repurposing found objects and salvaging junk, clothing , toys and model parts. He is also an alum at the Stan Winston School of Character Arts. by @stanwinstonschool

I meant to post this earlier. Sadly the show is sold out so you can’t even go see it! Sorry! But I took on the task of figuring out a low budget way to build the Audrey 2 character for a performance of Little Shop of Horrors at @lineagepac Lineage Performing arts in Pasadena. Director Hilary Thomas wanted to see the singer and integrate him into the plant rather than do the big fly trap puppet. So I came up with a design that combined orchids, pitcher plants, tendril tentacles puppeteered by dancers, and a gaping toothy maw that could actually swallow the actors! It was a crazy challenge. And I only pulled it off because the whole thing was co-built with my incredible and talented girlfriend and creative collaborator @buckaroo_bonz. Bonnie assisted in cutting and constructing the flower shapes, leaves, tentacles, and was a major major part of painting it with me. She painted all the best parts, including the most intricate petals, and the collar and head dress for the performer Trae. She even worked hard all week while I was off having fun at a badly timed vacation! And- she let us work in her studio space! Thank you eternally, Bonnie. You did such stunning work on this project!! We also built a hand puppet and a smaller trigger puppet for two other size stages. We’re both so proud of how it turned out and happy our very hard work paid off. I promise you’ve never seen Audrey 2 done like this before! Thanks also to Michelle Guth for doing Trae’s hair and makeup!! All these professional looking photos were by Sophie Sogomian. Thank you Sophie! by @stanwinstonschool

When the boyfriend’s awesome 13 year-old asks you to help him make a custom robot for his Dad’s 45th birthday, you say hell yeah…..Made in secret over the course of a month, Dez knocked it out of the park from design, assembly, and paint, including custom molding and casting from some additional borrowed molds. No surprise he was a natural in adopting some of his pop’s own techniques! The apple doesn’t fall far. Happy birthday @jessegeearts @munkmarvelous you are so very loved and admired ❤️🤖

And a very special shout out to @teyasoleil for both coordinating and supporting the covert mission and @jon_k_miller for some incredible detail molds! by @stanwinstonschool

I must say. I am blown away. I was left speechless at my birthday present! This robot lamp was designed by my 13 year old son and built in a conspiratorial collaboration with my incredible girlfriend @buckaroo_bonz. They worked for weeks together in secret, using my own techniques and material types! They even installed a pilot which is a custom made Lego figure of ME! It’s called Sir Bob and I will cherish it forever. I can’t thank you enough, Bonnie, for helping my kiddo make his dream a reality and helping show him how great it is to make a custom gift for someone you love. by @stanwinstonschool

I’ve been taking a break from original art lately as I’ve been working full time. But in my free time I’ve been building model kits with my girlfriend @buckaroo_bonz. We sit and build and paint while watching old b movies and it’s so fun and soothing. I think I’m going to do a lot more of these ww2 themed mech suit kits. I know I owe some of you some of things you asked about. I’m sorry about that and will be back in touch soon! by @stanwinstonschool

Today is a sad and frustrating day! Luky’s hardware has closed permanently. Every single piece I’ve made has had hardware and little doodads all over it that came from here. I kept it a secret for a while, only sharing with certain fellow artists. It was my treasure trove and they got thousands of my dollars! lol. But they are retiring and have sold off the entire inventory. I managed to fill several boxes from the dregs that were left. Tomorrow every thing else is going to the dumpster. If you need little scientific looking bits and bobs for your projects- you need to get down here NOW. They also have almost all of their braided hoses still if that interests you. RIP. I’m going to have to find a source for certain hardware bits that I used on almost every single sculpture. 😬 by @stanwinstonschool

Found this old conversation with @conceptual_executioner about turning art into stress. Contemplating taking a year off Monsterpalooza so I can make art that I enjoy without worrying if it’s going to sell or not. Anyway. Have a nice Friday, hope it ‘taint too stressful! by @stanwinstonschool
