It’s taboo in some yoga circles to train the body outside yoga practice. I always say, «in ancient India, householder yogis tended the farm, milked the cow, built a house, carried the kids.»
Besides, I’m getting older, and the joints like protection and stability - especially when one is prone to joint hyper mobility.

Once, a body worker sat me down and said, «you are going through a lot of life challenge, you have a family, the world is a hard place. You need some iron, a shield to protect you from life’s blows. I think you would benefit from building some muscle.»

I don’t strength train to get big. I train to feel strong, stable, and secure in myself. It happens to benefit my asana practice!

Do what you need to do to meet the world and your circumstances with resilience and strength.
And practice your yoga. 🧘🏽

Freedom doesn’t come for free. I am not talking about political freedom, but inner freedom, although they most definitely are connected to our collective ideologies. To receive inner freedom, you don’t need to do much, because the funny thing with freedom is the more you let go of the things you think you want and need, the freer you become.

Gaining vitality, creativity, inspiration and power isn’t just a matter of will but restraint.

This week we’ll continue with Patanjali’s first of the 8 limbs, the yamas, or self-restraints. Today we’ll discuss the fourth yama, Brahmacharya, or right use of energy.

Often brahmacharya is referred to as celibacy, the act of restraining oneself from thoughts and actions involving procreation. But we can also understand brahmacharya as mindful, right use of our creative life force energy, or prana. Thepurpose of this practice according to Patanjali is to conserve, master, and redirect prana or creative/sexual energy toward spiritual liberation, inner clarity and self-realization. Especially in this modern world, many people struggle with spreading their energy way too thin: sexually, socially, with careers and material consumption. The intention here is to practice being aware of where you leak your energy, what is wasted, and what can be saved to serve you, to serve your family, your work, and your community in the highest and most efficient way. When practiced successfully and consistently, we develop greater capacity for emotional self-regulation, a focused mind with higher intellect, and a deep wellspring of reserve energy to create life with meaningful clarity.
If you want to fly a rocket ship, run a marathon, or achieve enlightenment, you’re going to need a lot of powerful fuel, and brahmacharya is a key to achieving those dreams. And whether you want a better relationship with your boyfriend, or God, knowing how to direct your energy is important.

Do you want to feel a little more content, like you have enough. Today we discuss the third yama, Asteya, or non-stealing - a practice of honesty and contentment.

Taking from others without permission perpetuates feelings of lack, insecurity, denial, shame, paranoia, and distrust within the thief and the victim. These are toxic states that limit our growth and cloud our judgement. I’m sure you can think of many moments in your life and in our societies where stealing occurs. But stealing can show up in more subtle ways, that maybe we don’t even realize.

The first example of a quiet thief is very common - stealing time. Whether you are late, to arrive, or hang around too long, respecting boundaries and agreements on time, helps to develop discipline, mindfulness, and efficiency - how can one need less, think less, speak less, and do less. Part of yoga practice is learning how to simplify your life, respect others and save time for what really matters. No one is perfect, and to be honest, I am a bit of a time thief as well. 😅

The second silent thief is taking people’s energy. Energy thieves tend to struggle from not giving themselves enough. Oftentimes insecurity arises, dependency, attachment, and long stories to explain away their suffering.

Now we can’t make people change, but if you seek to inspire, and change a behavior yourself, the best we can do is live by example and take time to live more simply, with more self-reflection, sitting or walking in silence, and cultivating gratitude for the blessings we already have.

There are times in your life where your fears meet you head on and the only thing you can do is jump - directly into them. All of your paths have led you to this point and the options have become fewer, the circumstances bare greater weight the more you avoid the fire, and the only thing left to do is to trust, muster the courage, and take the leap. It requires faith, and it requires believing in yourself that you will land on two feet no matter what lies on the other side.

Fail or succeed, it doesn’t matter, what matters is you do what you fear most because it is usually exactly what you need to do to grow and become the person you are meant to be. That choice alone is winning.
