Jiu-jitsu isn’t just a sport, it’s an art, as cliché as that sounds. And I think what you take away from it depends on how you look at it.

As a socially unaware 20-year-old, I was in desperate need of some of these lessons.

Growing up, my boundaries were rarely respected (by myself and others). People took things from me that I didn’t want taken, and sometimes I didn’t even know those things were mine to begin with.

I let people do things to me that I didn’t want to happen, but I didn’t know how to say no. I didn’t even recognise that these were boundaries, that they were mine, or that they deserved to be respected.

I guess I was never really taught to use my outside voice.

And I think that’s one of the biggest things jiu-jitsu has taught me. To recognise when something doesn’t feel right, to speak up sooner and to understand that I’m allowed to say no. by @jitsyjade

I recognise that I’m not the perfect leader for everyone. There are people who respond much better to a more authoritarian-type leader. I know I do. I also recognise that there are many leaders in my life who I didn’t expect to respond well to, but I have.

The thing is, as a leader, you’re going to make so many mistakes, and there are always going to be other people who do certain things better than you. I don’t have many female leaders in my life, so I don’t have a lot to replicate. I don’t really know the feminine qualities of leadership, and I’m honestly making it up as I go.

I learn a lot from my male peers and leaders, and I’ve learned a lot from different people. I’ve taken small things from each one of them and made them my own.

I think these are very broad concepts. In leadership, you’re going to make mistakes you just have to learn from them. My team at Fitness Cartel have seen that firsthand. I am the type of person to admit to my shortcomings, and sometimes that’s a shortcoming in itself.

But if I were to start all over again knowing nothing, these are a few of the things I wish someone had told me.

I think the biggest lesson I’ve had to learn, which I didn’t include in this because I don’t think it’s relevant to everyone, is to look to be respected, not liked.

I would do this even with the kids. I really just wanted them to like me, and there is some truth to that because, without some sort of relationship, you can’t tell someone what to do. You don’t have any authority in their life.

However, after a certain point, we’re not looking to be liked anymore. We’re looking to be respected, and that means we have to give people opportunities for growth rather than just passively letting them be.

But I really don’t believe in the idea of “getting better every day.” I don’t think everyone needs to get better every day. I do believe that we can learn, and as we learn things, we unlearn other things, good or bad.

I’m really interested in leadership, and I don’t by any means claim to be a master at it. These are simply the lessons I have learned and am still learning, and I’m willing to be proven wrong. by @jitsyjade

I always tell the girls that I train with that I feel no different about myself. No matter how much my body changes, I haven’t seen myself any differently.

From the day that I gave birth to the day that I looked the smallest, I felt exactly the same way. I still have little insecurities. However, I pay attention to how I talk about myself.

Sometimes I feel a little bit judged, like I’m supposed to look better because I train so hard. But I have different goals.

When I was really small, I was fatigued and tired all the time. Things weren’t going well. I looked my best when I strength trained all the time, but I don’t like strength training. I like jiu-jitsu.

My jiu-jitsu body isn’t as hot as my strength training body. It is what it is.

You can change your goal. You can get all the results in the world. But the more important part is how you turn up for yourself along the way.

That’s the impressive part. by @jitsyjade
