We are thrilled to announce JJ Ratchford (he/him) as the 2026 Jazz Camp West Fellowship winner.

Raised in South Florida and now based in Baltimore, Maryland, JJ is a saxophonist, composer, and bandleader whose musical journey began at age 10. Discovering the music of Miles Davis and John Coltrane was the turning point leading him to the Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, and now to his second year at the Peabody Institute, where he studies under Tim Green and Tedd Baker.

JJ's music is rooted in the tradition of Black American Music, drawing from the lineages of Wayne Shorter, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Thelonious Monk while incorporating modern approaches entirely his own. His work is guided by a conviction Wayne Shorter once articulated: "to tell the story about the eternity of life."

"I am especially thrilled and honored to be in this year's Jazz Camp West program and receive mentorship under the great Anat Cohen. This experience is a celebration of all forms of art; I'm confident it will broaden my knowledge in the corridors of music, creativity, and life, and I'm excited to be learning from everyone involved!" – JJ Ratchford

What the Fellowship Makes Possible!

The Jazz Camp West Fellowship is a full-tuition scholarship plus a $500 travel stipend opening the door to the full Jazz Camp West experience: daily classes, jam sessions, open mics, and performances, alongside a specially designed program tailored to each year's winner. This summer, JJ will be mentored by Jazz Camp West Artistic Director Allison Miller and 2026 Artist in Residence, the incomparable Anat Cohen.

This is what it looks like when we invest in the next generation. JJ joins a growing lineage of Fellows whose full stories — and the journeys that brought them here — you can read on our Fellowship page. https://www.livingjazz.org/jazz-camp-west-fellowship by @evan.dexter.music
