I cannot thank Lee and Matt of @thehighlightreelatl enough for taking the time to put this #bts video together for me. I have never truly been captured while fully involved in a shoot. I didn’t even feel like I was being filmed. 🙏🏾 salute 🫡

A few years ago, I had the honor of sitting down with Sharon Cline at Cherokee Business Radio to discuss my passion of photography.

14 years ago, a firearms instructor friend invited me out to photograph some "VIPs" he was training. When I showed up, I realized the VIPs were active-duty Navy SEALs.

Naturally, they were standoffish seeing a guy with a camera. My buddy stepped in and vouched for me, mentioning my background as a combat veteran, 82nd Airborne Paratrooper, and a decade on a metro area SWAT team.

The mood shifted instantly. They started asking questions, and one of them looked at me seemingly impressed and asked, "You're SWAT?"

I just laughed "Dude, you guys are SEALs."

He replied “Yeah, but you guys do it every day.

Whether he was serious or humoring me, the ice was broken, and we got to work. After a while, I wanted tighter shots, so I asked if I could step forward of the firing line. They looked at each other, turned to me, and said, "We’re cool if you’re cool."
I smiled and replied, "I guess I’m about to find out how good you guys really are."

Promised them back then their faces wouldn't be shown unedited—keeping that word today. A great day on the range with top-tier professionals.

Sometimes getting the shot means lying on a workshop floor, wedged under a metal fabrication table with a telephoto lens.

The camera used was a Canon 5D Mark II with a 70-200mm lens, and just two simple speedlights strategically placed around the workshop. Looking back at the raw behind-the-scenes setup versus the final portrait, is a great reminder that high production value doesn't always require a massive studio setup. It requires placing light with purpose and finding the right angle, no matter how uncomfortable.

The gear was straightforward, but the environment and subject made the shot.

I shot this back in May 2012, just a year after I first picked up a camera in April 2011.

At the time, I was shooting with a Canon 7D, an 18-megapixel crop-sensor camera that hit the market in 2009. Fast forward 14 years, and my main driver is a Canon R5. On paper, the gear and my understanding of light have evolved beyond what I could have imagined back then.

Yet every time I look back at this image, there’s an intangible quality that stops me in my tracks. It’s a reminder that passion, raw instinct, and experimentation are just as powerful as the technical mastery we build over time.

Gear changes, technique sharpens, but the magic of catching a vision stays the same.

Earlier last month I had the honor of getting to work with James Andrew Kientzy.

Here’s what he had to say about his experience in the studio:
“JK was an absolute blast to work with. He made the atmosphere fun, exciting, and calming all at the same time. His creative process was so fun to watch and he is dialed in for perfection. He was open for ideas as well which made for a phenomenal combination and experience. I already found more shots I want to do and cannot wait to go back to see Jerry. The building was Very clean and aesthetically pleasing as well! I can’t say enough about my time there. The only negative I’d say is now I am mad at myself for waiting so long to get with him 😂”

Here’s a glimpse of some of the amazing shots that we got during his session!
