This is an excerpt from Screen 3 of my multi-channel installation Willow Black, featuring ethnobiologist Hayana Freitas and performer Julia Testas. 🌿 Showing at the Ruskin Gallery, @cambridge_school_of_art , until Oct 5 as part of Passing Traces, the work explores the relocation of Latin American bodies—human and botanical—within Britain, reimagining colonial fragments into something alive, unstable, and renewed.

Grateful to @aa2aproject and Anglia Ruskin University for the residency and support that made Willow Black possible — and to curator @elisabetta_ga along with fellow artists @natashavikulina , @sidwhitejones , @isabel_castro_jung and @stepanka.facerova for sharing this journey. 🙏✨ by @joannamamede

In early 2023, in the aftermath of the attempted coup in Brasília, a different chapter was beginning to unfold. Brazil had a new Ministry of Indigenous Peoples, led by Sônia Guajajara, and Indigenous leaders were taking up new positions within institutional politics.

In this excerpt from The Anthill, my experimental documentary, I follow Indigenous leaders up the ramp of Brazil’s National Congress during the February 2023 inauguration of Célia Xakriabá and Sônia Guajajara, a historic moment associated with the Bancada do Cocar.

In this election year, defending Indigenous rights also means ensuring that progress continues. The demarcation of Indigenous lands and the protection of their territories must continue to advance. If you believe in this agenda, show your support for Lula.

Don't let these achievements be lost.

Some photos have arrived from the AA2A 30 Year Exhibition in Chester, showing Willow Black as a two-channel moving image and ceramic roundel installation. This work explores the displacement of Latin American bodies, human and botanical, within Britain, and the questions of belonging and identity that emerge from these crossings.

So lovely to see the work in the space. Thank you @aa2aproject , Andy and @chrisjmillward for the photos 🙏 🤍 by @joannamamede

Thought I'd make a little video :)

These roundels are part of Willow Black and were made in Cambridge. If you want to know more about this work check my website or get in touch.

You can still acquire some selected roundels through my website until 31 July.

This view became a collection.

Over the past few years, Cambridge has quietly shaped so much of my work, and before I leave to spend some time abroad, I'm sharing this series one last time.

It's the final week of my July Studio Release, so if you've been thinking about bringing one of these pieces home, this is your chance.

I'll be back soon, but for now, I'm simply grateful for this place, and for everyone who has supported my work along the way. 🤍
