Some sketches from this summer in Europe. Screens and friends. Last 2 are my favourites. I think of you in me there is you :) by @joannecai.art
Desk pumpkins, 2026. Oil on Masonite. Scroll for the progressive destabilization of my family’s home. After Penny got porcupined, Tao Tao went to avenge her sister (housemate) and got hit with it even worse. I am heartbroken. Anyways, pumpkins on my desk. by @joannecai.art

Thank you to everyone who has come out to @lesliegrovegallery.ca to see the beautiful exhibit that @ntgartists has put on! It will be up for one more week, until October 4. I feel so grateful to get to make and enjoy and share and talk and learn about art ❤️ by @joannecai.art

Not much painting recently, but something else fun! I’ll have three pieces up in the @ntgartists exhibit at the @lesliegrovegallery.ca in September & October :) if you are in Toronto and able to come by, it would be lovely to see you! 🫶✨❤️‍🔥🍓 by @joannecai.art
Hibiscus in the afternoon, 2026. Oil on masonite, en plein air. I wanted to paint these flowers in my front yard all of Sunday but I had too many other things to do and by the time I got out they were mostly closed. That’s okay :’) by @joannecai.art

Fort Niagara which is in America, 2026. Oil on masonite, en plein air. I don’t even know where Toronto is in the grand scheme of things so imagine my surprise when I discovered that you can SEE the United States of America from NOTL. There was a torrential downpour while I painted this so I hid under the gazebo (which is from some horror movie according to my friend’s mother?). That was not enough and my panels got very wet. Luckily I passed by an art gallery on the way back and the lovely owner gave me a blow dryer to dry the panels. Thanks Gina! by @joannecai.art
Path along Niagara River, 2026. Oil on masonite, en plein air. I wound up in NOTL a few weekends ago for the first time and it was a lovely little place. While I was painting some kids visiting Canada from China came to me and were asking me questions and I let them paint a bit and they asked me why I was using colours that were not there and I wanted to open these children’s eyes to the wonders of colour theory but their parents made them leave. Lots of changing skies and weather. by @joannecai.art
Tomato and egg (ji dan chao xi hong si), 2026. Oil on masonite. From a few months ago. This is the national dish of any Chinese kid with working parents. Like when you’re late to piano lessons and you forgot to remind your parents to drive you and you haven’t eaten yet so they have to feed you first, and then on the drive there they mention the hourly rate your piano teacher charges so you can do the math and figure out how many dollars your lateness has caused your parents to lose. Anyways this is still one of my favourite things to eat and just reminds me of home. by @joannecai.art
