POSTS STORIES REELS

My guest on JobsWorth this week is commercial photographer and founder of Attend, Hannah Miles.

After studying textile design at university, Hannah landed a job in New York, where a chance encounter on a dating app sparked an unexpected career in photography.

What started as a hobby eventually became a successful business, working with brands including @sohohouse @candykittens and @thegentsjournal

But becoming a mum brought some of the realities of self-employment into sharp focus.

Now, having just welcomed her second child into the world, Hannah is approaching things differently, launching an agency that will allow her to grow her business without having to be behind the camera for every job.

We talk about ambition, motherhood, the importance of putting yourself out there and what happens when the career you’ve built needs to evolve alongside your life.

Please enjoy… Hannah Miles.

At 22, Hannah Miles got back from a week on a boat to a job offer in New York.

A woman she'd met at a trade show had been chasing her the whole time. Hannah had no signal and no idea. She'd accidentally played hard to get.

It was print design, not photography, but New York is where her career began.

Full episode out Wednesday 4th November.

One phone call. Six years of work.

Hannah Miles still remembers the coffee shop she was in when she cold called @sohohouse . They booked her two weeks later, and she’s worked with them ever since.

Her rule, from her dad’s sales training: go looking for the no.

Full episode out tomorrow.

Send this to someone who hates picking up the phone 😅

‘Stop thinking about work’

It might be some of the worst advice out there.

I’m back from a week away with my beautiful family. A week where I had every intention of not thinking about work.

I felt like a failure less than an hour in.

But instead of fighting against it, I leant into it. Because “Thinking about work” and “working” are two very different things.

I went away on the edge of burning out, knowing that something was going to give…that something(s) needed to change

And it turns out that thinking about those things when you’re out of your daily routine. Outside of your business/office/job. Surrounded by the people you love… might be the best time to do it.

Eating cake, drinking wine and staring at the sea seemed to help too.

So think about work. Think about what you want from it. About how to make it work for you. About how you want it to make you feel and the life it can give you outside it.

And if you can, do it on a beach on the South West coast of Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Two and a half years of his life. Just sitting on a train.

That was the realisation that made Hamid Oukili, co-owner of Brunch Co, start questioning what he was doing with his life.

Same train. Same platform. Same faces. Every single day.

Sometimes it takes looking at your life a little differently to realise something needs to change.

Send this to someone who’s currently reading it on a train home 👀

Is starting your own business really worth the risk?

For a lot of people, the perceived security of employment is one of the biggest things stopping them from taking the leap.

But is that fear justified?

James Wall, owner of North, offers a refreshingly honest perspective on the realities of working for yourself.

Because whilst there’s plenty to be said for being your own boss, there’s also a lot to be said for knowing where your next pay cheque is coming from.

If you’ve been there and done it, what do you think? Is the freedom worth the uncertainty?

From the archive: do a job that brings the kid out in you.

That’s Jack Hodgson’s advice.

As a kid, the best part of school for him was being outdoors…and now he’s an urban gardener.

When did your job last make you feel like that?

It’s a simple question, and a good one.

No new episode this week, so here’s one worth catching up on. The full conversation with Jack is on every podcast app, link in bio.

TV presenter turned wedding celebrant Carol Smillie might just be one of the loveliest guests I’ve ever sat down with.

But when it comes to giving advice, she doesn’t mess about.

If you’re on the fence about taking the leap and doing something scary then it might be Carol’s words that give you the nudge you need to make it happen.

“You decide how good you are. You decide how bad you are. That’s it.”

Kurt Davies has one piece of advice for anyone feeling held back: back yourself, know what you can do, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

Know someone who needs to hear that? Send it to them 💪

“Without your health, none of it matters.”

Kurt Davies spent years chasing recognition and success. Then something happened that changed what he thought they were worth, and he’s pretty open about what it taught him.

I think I’m ready to quit.

If you’re building something for yourself, doing something that scares you or attempting to make a change…those words, at some point, will run through your head.

Here’s your reminder (and mine) not to give up.

My guest on JobsWorth this week is Kurt Davies, a former footballer turned teacher who has spent more than two decades as the owner of Saint Pierre School in Leigh-on-Sea.

Growing up in Hadleigh, football was everything. But after injuries disrupted his playing career, an unexpected opportunity took him into education.

He had no formal teaching qualifications but quickly developed a passion for helping children build the confidence he'd struggled with growing up.

More than two decades later, Saint Pierre remains a huge part of his life.

But success hasn't come without challenges. A heart attack in 2015 and his daughter's breast cancer diagnosis forced Kurt to reconsider his relationship with work and what he'd spent so many years chasing.

We talk about ambition, confidence, family, the pressures of business ownership and finding contentment in a world that constantly encourages us to want more.

Please enjoy… Kurt Davies.
