WINTER TRAINING
After some time off post-Ironman, I’ve been slowly building back to fitness. Nothing must to report, volume is a bit lower due to uni work, but just getting miles in the legs 🫡
Been doing a bit of CX, a lot of gravel, and watched the national hillcilmb champs. Hopefully only 2 months before the first road race of the season…
Blood sugar management has been going strong. It’s much easier to manage sugars when in the uni routine. Been approved for a pump, so that will be a massive learning curve, but excited to get stuck in 🤩

70.3 WORLDS (P46)/140.6 ALMERE-AMSTERDAM 🥇
Super happy to end the season strong with two decent results at worlds and my first full Ironman! It was an absolutely brilliant experience to race abroad twice in three weeks.
Worlds: P46 in age group. A chest injury 3 weeks out slightly hampered my prep, but pleased to pull off P46 in AG. Race went pretty much to plan, below average swim, okay bike and surprisingly good run considering the injury. Overall, it was great to be part of such a large race and to compete against some of the best athletes in the world!
Almere-Amsterdam: I went in to this race quite hesitant given the extended taper due to worlds. Under prepared, but excited to give it a go! I started off with a good swim, despite someone randomly dragging me back about 2km in?! Conservative bike leg, kept HR in Z2 and didn’t over cook it. I knew the run is where I would feel the lack of specific prep, so held on and managed to get round in 10:04. I was super pleased to put together a decent performance, enough to win my age category by a solid margin.
Now time to travel and take a bit of time to recover. Next season, I’m going to be focusing more on cycling, trying to gain points on my British cycling licence as well as compete at BUCS road race. The last two years from beginner triathlete to Ironman have taught me a lot and I’m definitely ready to take on the next challenge! by @joetabtri

Managed to not chop any wheels so let’s call that a success 🤝🇮🇹 by @joetabtri

IRONMAN 70.3 STAFFORDSHIRE (race pics to follow) 🥇
Planning and training for my first half has always been in the back of my mind for the past year or so. Really pleased to come away with the AG win (18-24) and 22nd overall. Happy to have qualified for the 70.3 World Championships in Finland later this year! 🇫🇮✈️
Race report:
Swim: Started strong and found the feet of a few good swimmers early. I soon realised just because someone is quick doesn’t mean they can swim in the right direction 😅. Ended up swimming on my own but taking a more efficient line and came out of the water in a decent time.
Bike: Started off nervous, with all my nutrition falling off on a bumpy road within the first 5 miles😍. Shortly after another section of potholes, I heard a hissing sound coming from my bike. After stopping and checking my bike, I realised I luckily didn’t have a flat. However the sound persisted for most of the bike leg. I found a good group and kept a solid tempo throughout. I only realised after the race that my front break was making the sound and rubbing on the wheel the whole time 🥲 (Ez speed gainz for next race…)
Run: Came out of T2 3rd in my Age group. 15 minutes off the front. Ran at my own tempo in the heat, taking on large amounts of water at every aid station. Just kept on ticking off the miles when I heard my family tell me it was 30 seconds to first with a mile to go. Fully emptied the tank for the last km and managed to take the AG win by 30 seconds. No finish line celebrations, just medical assistance and delirium 🤣.
Really enjoyed that one, can’t wait to do more 70.3’s in the future.
Blood sugars remained quite high during the race. Going up to 25mmol at one point 🤯, something to work on for next time.

TWO YEARS ON.
Two years ago today I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. A lot has changed for me in that time, I’ve gone to uni, started taking triathlon seriously and learned a lot about glucose management. I never would have thought living with diabetes would open opportunities to learn more about my health and train with some of the best athletes in the world.
I’m pleased to announce I will be attending @teamnovonordisk Talent ID camp in July! 🇮🇹 I can’t wait to learn more about living and racing with diabetes from the best in the world. Hopefully the start of something bigger… 🤞
Here’s some highlights from the last two years of training, racing and having fun on the bike ;)

BUCS SPRINT + MTR
Can’t complain with 44th in the overall (4th non-British Tri funded athlete) considering the insane depth of the field. Without any specific speed training I was quite hesitant going into the race, especially the short mixed team relay. Did the best I could given the training I’ve been doing so couldn’t ask for any more from myself.
Overall it was a really fun day out, good to see my bike is starting to get quite competitive too. It was pretty eventful at parts, but I’ll let the images do the talking there 🤣
Blood sugars went super high pre-race but luckily this didn’t affect me too much as they quickly levelled out. Didn’t ingest any carbs during the race considering it was only an hour.

Note to self: Get check the forecast multiple times on race day so you aren't the only one in tights and a jumper 🤣🥵
Disappointing race at Wilmslow half, had to drop out 40 minutes in at 11.5km. I generally start races with blood sugar on the high side as they usually drop throughout the race, but today they continued to rise. I didn't feel great, with high blood sugar combined with some foot pain I felt it was best to pull out so as not to cause any longer term damage.
Managed to mentally and physically bounce back by the afternoon and get out on the bike to do some V02 efforts up some local climbs, setting some power PBs in the process! Bit of a shame to DNF, but the fitness and mentality were there, just not the blood sugar or equipment (Poor fitting shoes). More motivated to perform the next race, with some crits and TTs on the bike lined up for the next few weeks!

Didn't expect to still be in full winter kit in March! 🥶 Base training has been ticking along nicely, it's been good to add in little bits of speed too before my first half marathon in two weeks time!
My main focus of the last few weeks has been on nutrition and hydration around training. I've felt a big difference in my endurance rides when I make sure the three meals before the long ride all contain quality carbs. Also, trying to re-hydrate quickly after a run has massively helped my recovery and energy throughout the day.
This has the added bonus of making blood sugars more stable and easier to manage. You can put in a great day of training, but you won't get all the benefits if you don't fuel and recover properly!

WINTER TRAINING
The last few weeks I've been building up training again, after some down time at Christmas. I've averaged 21 hours training the last three weeks, so it's time for some recovery now!
The focus has been just on building a strong aerobic base, with a few intense sessions added in to mix things up. The speed isn't there yet, but I'm feeling aerobically strong and ready to tackle a long season!

It's been a really positive term for training and I definitely feel things are going in the right direction.
The highlight was definitely placing 33rd at BUCS Duathlon, up from 174th last year 🤣. Still lots of work to do to reach the top, but nice to see numbers and results improving.
Now the focus moves to base training as I look to build some endurance for my summer races. This year I'll be targeting 70.3 Staffordshire and Outlaw Nottingham as my 'A' races. Excited to build up the endurance and see how I perform in longer races 💪
Happy to be involved with @inflitetypeone, expect big things from them on the UK cycling scene in the coming years!

Spin out to Seaham today testing out the full racing setup, safe to say if I'm slow on race day I've only got myself to blame 😅
Been lucky enough to try out a new CGM recently, the Libre 3 which was only just released and WOW it's amazing! It's literally so small you forget you're wearing it, great to see game changing innovations like this coming out!

MANCHESTER XC RELAYS
A really great experience for my first cross country race! Who knew 3km could be so brutal? I definitely didn't have the race I wanted to, but a lot of lessons learnt that I can hopefully take into future races.

I'm back on the Libre 2 flash glucose monitor. This means I can take blood sugar measurements without finger pricks. This will allow me to manage my levels a lot more closely for the time being, which will result in better recovery and performance in training!
