Locust Jones’ major live drawing ‘We forget what happened yesterday’ is on display as part of the SCA Alumni Fauvette Loureiro Memorial Scholarship Exhibition, where he was selected as a finalist in the Mid-Career/Established category ⭐️

Produced in situ in the gallery space leading up the exhibition, the work responds to varied news sources as an immediate and continually developing record of current world events.

The artist says: “News, images and information are filtered through my studio practice, moving between immediate responses to current events and investigations into historical archives … The act of drawing slows down and reworks the speed at which this information is encountered.”

The exhibition continues at the Sydney College of Arts (SCA) Gallery until 7 November 2026.

Elger Esser and Locust Jones are close friends, although their works could hardly be more different . . .

Experience the unexpected union of Locust Jones’s eruptive mural - hand-painted onto the gallery wall - and Elger Esser’s luminous photographic plates, coated in oil paint and varnish.

“The two meet in an unlikely place: in nature, and in the question of what nature can still carry today.”

The joint exhibition ‘The Nature of Unrest’ closes tomorrow ~ Saturday 29 August.

Locust Jones’s new works on Japanese Gampi paper ~ on show as part of his joint exhibition with Elger Esser, ‘The Nature of Unrest’ 🔵

“Jones’s work is frontal, nervous and charged: a meditation on the density of the present, on news, violence, geo-politics, and the exhaustion of a world continually overtaking itself.”

Celebrations for the opening of ‘The Edge of Things’ last night at @artgalleryofnsw ~ featuring an expressive large-scale drawing by Locust Jones 🔵⚫️

Locust’s work ‘The end of the beginning, New Year’s Eve to April Fools’ is a spontaneous visual diary of the events and people that made the daily news from NYE to April Fools’ Day 2018, sourcing his imagery from the internet, radio, newspapers and electronic media.

The exhibition explores the ways in which artists give form to the dynamism and disorder of our contemporary world, and continues until 9 May 2027 in the Naala Badu building.

“Jones’s piece – October 2023 – which begun in that month and continued for another six, is astonishing. For this particular piece, Jones worked onto nightblack paper, a sheet more than 7m in length, with gold and silver pens. He recorded the news as it came, and as we know, much came, and it has not ceased to come. Here, in one massive work, a work that echoes traditions of ancient tapestry, we see mixtures of the frenetic real-time commentary of street graffiti with spontaneous, occult glyph making, with dark energy and bubbling overwhelming horror and anger, with confusion and disbelief. This massive work is overwhelming in itself, it is explosive and magical. Jones’s line often seems to be mined straight from his unconscious, but there are words here too, words we recognise, words we know all too well now. The work also features wars, there are machinations, there is horrendous loss of life and disaster. Jones has exposed himself to it all, and he bleeds a terrible, bright alchemy onto the page, not trying to distill or to make sense – there is possibly no sense to make, no time to reflect, because the next thing has already happened, and somehow, Jones adds that in as well, lines crossing over one another. ⁣
⁣
October 2023 alone deserves to be seen – it’s an astonishing work.”⁣

“Smoke and Mirrors, as a show, truly seized my mind and heart. Seeing an artist so engaged with the immediacy of world events is powerful stuff; Jones is clearly pretty bold, saying what he needs to. He’s also not didactic - he is in no way telling you what to think or feel; he’s more initiating a conversation, asking if you see what he sees. His wild, visceral line and energised approach gives his work a truly immediate feel; it’s just great to see art this raw and vibrant that is so rooted in the realities of now. It’s also harrowing - but that’s important too; Jones is inviting us to try and process a complex moment in human history, and that will not be done by shutting our eyes.” ⁣

For over 20 years, artist Locust Jones’ practice has woven layers of stories and images that mirror the frenetic pace at which society consumes everyday news and current affairs. From February to June this year, Jones’ monumental 2007-2008 artwork ‘The Bird Agents’ was displayed at SAM for the first time since its acquisition in 2014. Seventeen years on, the images and themes of ‘The Bird Agents’ are still eerily prescient; created against the backdrop of the Iraq War and the brutal news cycle of the time, the artwork’s enveloping chaos continues to resonate.

Our latest episode of the SAM Talks podcast sees SAM Artistic Director Danny Lacy in conversation with Jones, where the pair explore Jones’s evolving creative practice, how sound and news cycles fuel his work, and why drawing remains his most immediate way of processing a world in constant motion. The episode is now streaming on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music – listen now via our link in bio.

For over 20 years, Locust’s practice has woven layers of stories and images that replicate the frenetic pace at which society consumes everyday news and current affairs, in a variety of mediums.⁣
 ⁣
I can’t avoid the smoke and mirrors in the relentless 24/7 news cycles, the obscured truth, the embellished, misleading and irrelevant information. These ink drawings are my response. Over the course of eighteen months in Kyoto, Tokyo, and Katoomba, immersed in the world’s unfolding events, this is a visual diary. Each stroke grapples with the tension between appearance and reality, the narratives filtered through my personal lens.⁣
