⛰️ Nelson Lakes National Park – Te Araroa 🇳🇿

The best day of my entire Te Araroa journey started at 4am… in the dark… halfway up a mountain.

But I’ll get to that.

This section from Hanmer Springs to St Arnaud absolutely blew my mind — easily my favourite stretch of the whole South Island. Big alpine passes, wild terrain, and non-stop climbing meant I was very grateful to be keeping my energy, focus and recovery dialled with Optiventure supplements each day 💪

I took a few alternate routes along the way — including a solo river crossing of the Waiau to reach the base of Waiau Pass.

Climbing that pass in the dark felt questionable (it is arguably one of the most technically challenging sections of the whole TA - basically rock climbing!)… until sunrise lit up a cloud inversion over Lake Constance. One of those moments where you just stop and stare 😍

From there it just kept getting better — rivers, forests, steep climbs over Travers Pass, and a magical night alone at Upper Travers Hut (well… except for a gang of very noisy kea waking me up at dawn with their shenanigans 🐦😅).

From there, I detoured up to Sunset Saddle, grinding my way up loose scree to camp beside a magical alpine tarn — a wild, exposed spot that felt like the perfect lead-in to what was coming next.

Then came the final push.

Another 4am start, climbing through loose scree and scrambling up Angelus Peak in the dark…

…and then the sun rose.

Looking down over Lake Angelus and the surrounding peaks was hands down the most beautiful view I’ve ever witnessed. Pure magic. ✨

From there, it was an all-time ridge line walk along Robert Ridge to St Arnaud — grinning the entire way.

Some days on trail stay with you forever. This was one of them.

Apologies in advance… you guys are gonna get spammed so hard once I start going through everything I’ve shot so far here in Scotland 🤣🤣

📸 POV: Your camera gear weighs more than your carry-on allowance. 😂

I’ve just arrived in Edinburgh to do some work with Visit Scotland, and getting all my heavy camera gear into carry-on is always a bit of a challenge!

So, what actually made the cut for this trip? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

In this reel, I’m running through the camera gear I’ve packed, and why I chose it to come along for the adventure.

Got questions about any of the gear? Drop them in the comments👇

I don’t share a huge amount of photography-specific content here, but I’d love to do more — from gear choices and behind-the-scenes shoots to the realities of working as an adventure photographer.

Is this the kind of content you’d find useful? Let me know! 🙌

After spending three months hiking over 1,300km of trails through the South Island of New Zealand, @jonharris_photography firmly believes he's indeed found the most beautiful place on this gorgeous planet we inhabit.

Insane alpine passes, dramatic river gorges, ancient beech forests, and remote backcountry huts often reminded me so much of landscapes in Europe, Scandinavia, and Patagonia – you'd have thought you travelled further than across the ditch. by @jonharris_photography

☕️ I love the idea of cooking a proper meal on the trail… but this combo is hard to beat! 😅

One pot of boiling water, breakfast ready in minutes, and absolutely zero washing up. 🙌 When you’re hiking day after day, sometimes simple really is best!

☀️ Optiventure Core Sunrise — non-negotiable for my trail routine, helping me feel ready to take on another day of adventure. Use code JH10 for 10% off!

🥣 Radix Breakfasts — ridiculously tasty, convenient, and packed with complete nutrition to fuel a big day on the trail.

☕️ Dog & Gun Full Send coffee parachutes — easy to brew, and a seriously good cup of coffee to get the day started.

Three trail favourites that make mornings just that little bit easier. And when you’ve got a big day of hiking ahead, that’s a win in my books! 🥾

What’s your go-to trail breakfast? Are you a cook-up-on-the-trail type, or all about keeping it simple? 👇

I’ve got a free window to explore some cool stuff in Scotland later this month.

🥾 11 things every Te Araroa hiker needs to know before they start

Setting out on the TA is an epic adventure — and one that can be made a whole lot more enjoyable (and safer!) with a bit of preparation.

Hiking the South Island TA last year taught me plenty. Some of these lessons I planned for, thanks to the brilliant advice of hikers who had come before me.

Others? I learned the hard way. 😅

After 1,300+ km and 85 days on the trail, these are 11 things I reckon are pretty important for anyone getting ready to tackle the TA.

Hopefully a few of them will make your planning a little easier, your pack a little smarter, and your time on the trail even more enjoyable.

And that’s really what this is about — passing on the lessons that were passed on to me. The TA community is pretty special, and there’s a lot of knowledge out there if you know where to look.

If you’ve hiked the TA, what’s the number one tip you’d pass on to someone about to begin? 👇

And if you’re planning to hike it yourself, save this post for later! 🇳🇿

🌅 Would you hike 15km for this view???

Sunrise on the summit of Angelus Peak was one of the absolute highlights of my entire Te Araroa journey.

While most people hike in from St Arnaud and stay at the stunning hut beside Lake Angelus, I came from the other direction, over Sunset Saddle.

That meant a 4am start, followed by two hours of scrambling over rock fields and up a highly exposed route to the summit — all in the dark. 😳

Exhilarating is probably an understatement.

But then the first light started spilling across Lake Angelus… and suddenly every step was worth it. 🤩

Some views really are worth getting up stupidly early for.

Would you hike 15km for this? 👇

As the spring weather brings warmer days, you'll start to notice our local gari (snakes) becoming more active across Booderee. 🐍🌿

A variety of snake species call the park home, including the striking Malya (Diamond python). Gari (snakes) play an important role in maintaining healthy ecosystems, so if you're out exploring, remember to stay aware of your surroundings and give any snakes you encounter plenty of space.
