Archaeologist, self employed in soil micromorphology! Bootcamp enthousiast 💪

Oh no! There's a root going through my Neolithic coastal dune..😮 by @jos_kleijne
Sometimes we find "microlayers" on a centimeter scale.. Here not so much: clayey natural crusts, sandy covering layers, and floor layers, some of only 0.5mm thin, filled with microscopic charcoal and other remains of craft activities😮 all that remains are two small patches in between sections with intense bioturbation. This site is a project for @moesgaard_ , excavated by @arkaeologerne, my report is almost finished! #micromorphology #soilmicromorphology #archaeology #thinsectionthursday by @jos_kleijne
As the end of the year is drawing near, here's a little treat 😊 see if you can identify the various calcareous elements! All the photos are from a #Roman civil site on the Lower Rhine, near Alphen aan den Rijn.. by @jos_kleijne

Really happy about this new paper! https://doi.org/10.1016/j.quascirev.2025.109230 The lakeside landscape of Duvensee was intensively used during the Mesolithic: finds of hazelnuts, bark mats, hearths, and lakeshore dumps are well known! Over 250 radiocarbon dates from the Mesolithic occupation were collected and critically assessed. We created Bayesian models, and used these to interpret site function variability, and we related site chronology to vegetation developments (hazel decline?) and climate change (8.2ka BP event?)! by @jos_kleijne
First one of 2025, or last one of 2024? Anyway, our fun little experimental shell midden study is finally published! In close cooperation with the people at @openluchtmuseum_swifterkamp and @rug.bachur We cooked and roasted cockle shells, we ate the shellfish, dumped the shells in 1m2, @stevenvanenzo very carefully stepped on some of the shells, and Hester and I sampled the midden, and together we analysed the result using soil micromorphological techniques! https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12520-024-02124-z by @jos_kleijne
Ferrous Friday, is that a thing?? #ferrousfriday Here you see the microphoto of a site in the Tilburg city centre, dating to the medieval or early modern period. A sandy groundmass is visible with white/grey quartz grains. But the main focus is the black and coloury part in the middle. These are iron slag minerals, including probably fayalite, indicating the smelting of iron took place nearby! #micromorphology #thinsection #archaeology #industrialarchaeology #metallurgy by @jos_kleijne
A small paper published in Dutch. It's a prequel to the micromorphological analysis of culinary practices and trampling of an experimental (mini-) shell midden, I built together with Groningen archaeology students/alumni @stevenvanenzo en Hester Kamstra @openluchtmuseum_swifterkamp, a few years ago. For those of you who want to read it: https://doi.org/10.21827/PA.33.19-24 The English language peer-reviewed paper, which includes the thin sections, is being revised at the moment! #micromorphology #archaeology #shellmidden #experimentalarchaeology by @jos_kleijne
Does anyone care for some protein after an intense weekend? Here is a fragment of an eggshell from the Roman temple site of Herwen (@heiligdomherwenhemeling ) Clearly visible are the many knobs (so-called mammillary knobs) on top of the calcareous surface (the prismatic layer). We don't yet know what animal produced the egg (avian?). At least I can't see it from my thin section.. #thinsectionsunday #micromorphology #archaeology by @jos_kleijne
Not only soil micromorphology, I'm also still an archaeologist of course! For a few months I've been looking for this part of a perforated lower left canine of a brown bear. It was found, together with a birch bark satchel, in the 1960s in Broek in Waterland (!), but now it's lost.. Such teeth are known from later 4th and early 3rd millennium BCE graves across Eurasia, so could that be the case here as well? The find was published and photographed by D.P. Bosscha Erdbrink in 1982. Stock photo from Wikipedia 🐻 by @jos_kleijne
I forgot to share it here, some of you might have seen it already: paper about soil micromorphology and pXRF on shell midden sediments and fluvial soils at Rinnukalns in Latvia! Thanks to all the co-authors, helpful reviewers and editors at QEH https://doi.org/10.1016/j.qeh.2024.100003 by @jos_kleijne
A short impression of my travels.. 4 countries, 2 days, 4 trains, no missed connections, and I've made it to Rome! #inquaroma2023 by @jos_kleijne
