2:50 marathon and 18th place overall.

Running just wide per week.

Here’s how.

SKIN IN THE GAME.

There’s a difference between knowing the path and walking it.

For the last 15 years, I’ve coached athletes, executives and high performers to achieve results they once thought were beyond them.

But our coaching isn’t built on theory alone.

It’s built on evidence, application, and experience.

I’ve spent decades testing the limits of human performance on myself first.

* 24-Hour Indoor Rowing British Record
* 3-mile swim, 240-mile cycle, 33-mile ultra marathon
* Run Coast to Coast: 215 miles in 46 hours 54 minutes
* London Marathon: 2:52
* Berlin Marathon: 2:45
* New York Marathon: 2:48
* Chicago Marathon: 2:41
* Boston Marathon: 2:39
* Ironman Leeds: 11:23
* UTMB Snowdonia 100-Miler: 44 hours

I’ve experienced the training highs, the race-day breakthroughs, the injuries, the setbacks, the failures, and the moments where everything tells you to stop.

That’s why our approach is different.

In today’s coaching world, there’s no shortage of people repeating information they’ve read.

What separates great coaches is the ability to combine science with lived experience.

To know when to push.

When to hold back.

When to adapt.

When to trust the process.

And when to change it.

The best coaches don’t just understand performance.

They’ve lived it.

Because coaching isn’t about telling people what to do.

It’s about guiding them through challenges you’ve faced yourself.

That’s the foundation of hybrid performance coaching.

Not theory.

Not motivation.

Applied expertise, backed by real-world experience.

Results leave clues. Experience leaves scars. We have both.

Stop trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

The cookie cutter doesn’t work.

The model must fit the athlete, not the other way around.

The last 15 years working in pro sport has taught me that not everyone is created equal, and your training needs to reflect that.

The knowledge shaped how I train now, and ultimately, why I can run like I can as a heater athlete.

No genetic advantage, just method in the madness and granular level detail.

Through focusing on these 5 movement patterns we can programme for absolutely anyone!

Most people are obsessed with ‘the best’ exercises to perform, yet the best comes down to the individual.

Are they competent?
Can they execute effectively?
Are they pain free?
What’s their training history?
What’s their injury history?

Most aren’t digging this deep, so it just ends up as another cookie cutter regardless of how ‘personalised’ they say it is.

Within each movement pattern we have exercise selection, the selection then is dependent on the above factors for the client.

The body does not recognise specific exercises, only stimulus and load.

Some will argue a back squat is the best lower body strength exercise, but what if you have poor range of motion, lack of control around the knees leading to excessive valgus or varus (knees dropping in or dropping out) or have spinal issues where axial loading is an issue? A leg press may now be ‘the best’ option for you because it’s the one you can execute pain free and progress weekly.

Our programming isn’t complex in nature, the complex part is knowing what exercise selection will benefit the athlete and client the most at different stages of their development, that’s what separates us 🫡

Breaky at 7.30, back to back calls, programming and new client onboardings until 1.30. Coco pops down the hatch and on the bike for 2, one hour window before school run.

Leave your ‘ideal’ out of it, rarely does it exist, you create the opportunities. I’d take the imperfect over not getting it done every day of the week.

10 mins easy.

3x10 mins at 350-360w
3 mins easy between blocks

10 mins easy to finish.

Wallop 👊🏻

I’ve spent over 15 years working in professional sport, and one thing I’ve learnt is that high performance comes at a cost.

But that cost shouldn’t be everything else that matters to you.

I’ve run a 2:39 marathon, whilst running a business, raising two young children and having responsibilities outside of training.

Does it require sacrifice? Absolutely.

But I refuse to believe that chasing your physical potential should come at the expense of being the father, partner or person you want to be.

For most of us, training isn’t our job. It’s something we choose to do because we want to become better.

So make sure it’s actually making your life better.

Train with purpose. Perform at your best. Be present for everything else.

That’s what being an Every Day Athlete is all about.

You’ll pay for what you see value in.

That value is different from one person to another, that could be ‘pounds and pence’, experiences, or what what you learn from the environment you’re in. There is no right and wrong.

Whatever the reason, adding value is something we’re constantly improving inside the EDA and we will go above and beyond to see you succeed.

In sports, you’ve 30+ squad members that all have different needs, demands, and requirements. Some need an arm around them, some need a rocket up their arse, some just need to be told to run through a brick wall.

In many ways, the programming is the easy part, it’s managing the athlete through the programme and building the relationships and trust to get the most out of the individual that separates the average coaches from the great ones.

Saturday morning send with the mountain.

Block 1.

A: 10 min bike
B: 10 min AMRAP of:
15 DB thruster
15 burpees
15 cal ski

Block 2:

A: 10 min bike
B: 10 min AMRAP of:
15 alternate reverse lunge
15 ring rows
50m farmers walks

Block 3:

A: 10 min bike
B: 10 min AMRAP of:
15 DB bench
15 cal row
15 box jumps

A decent blend of everything in training right now, no events in the immediate but staying ready to turn my hand to anything when needed!

Always easier to stay ready than get ready!

We’re so obsessed with how quickly we can get results that we’ve forgotten what it actually takes to keep them.

And I think the fitness industry has a lot to answer for.

12 week transformations. 30 day challenges. Your dream physique in 90 days.

It’s not just fitness either. 100k business months, overnight success stories. Everywhere you look, someone’s selling you a shortcut.

But here’s the problem.

You can’t shortcut the foundations.

You can lose weight quickly, train six days a week and follow a restrictive diet to get results.

But if the only way to maintain those results is to keep doing something you can’t sustain, what have you actually achieved?

It’s like building a house on sand.

You can keep adding layers, but without solid foundations, eventually something gives.

And in fitness, those foundations are pretty simple.

Learn to train properly. Understand your nutrition. Build habits that fit around your life. Be consistent.

None of it is particularly exciting. None of it sells a quick transformation.

But it’s what makes the difference between getting results and keeping them.

Have a goal. Build a plan. Take action. Take responsibility for what you can control.

But give yourself the time to actually see it through.

Progress won’t always be linear. Life will get in the way. There will be periods where things slow down.

That doesn’t mean what you’re doing isn’t working.

Sometimes you simply haven’t given it enough time.

I’ve seen far more people achieve lasting results through years of consistency than through any short-term transformation.

And that’s where the real value is.

Not just the physique you build, but the habits, knowledge and confidence you develop along the way.

Stop putting unrealistic deadlines on things that could genuinely change your life.

Build the foundations. Enjoy the process. Give yourself time.

Because getting in shape is one thing.

Building a lifestyle that allows you to stay there is something completely different.

10x 1km @ 3:20/km
90s rest

NGL, some lactate accumulation / over did it on the caffeine consumption lead to an unplanned toilet break after rep 7 😂

Don’t pretend like you’ve not been there, you all know the drill.

Felt pretty cruisey, tasty last couple but another brick in the wall.

Missed out on @tokyomarathonfoundation, missed out on @nxtri and should find out whether I’ve got in @sydney_marathon this next week.

Get your name in the hat, it doesn’t mean it’s gonna always come off.

If that doesn’t happen, might enter one of these Hyrox things to keep me ticking over!

Honestly, couldn’t be prouder of @michaelcarey_1.

December 2024, Michael reached out lacking confidence, with a baby on the way and a desire to become a better version of himself.

Not just for his family, but for himself.

He knew that to become the person he wanted to be, the work had to start with him.

On the left, his first check in from January 2025. On the right, this week.

18 months in. 10kg of body fat gone.

But for me, that’s not even the biggest transformation.

Since joining EDA, Michael has become a father, earned a promotion at work and taken on more responsibility than ever before.

Does he have more stress in his life? Absolutely.

But his capacity to handle it has completely changed.

He’s gone from struggling to run 5km to completing half marathons, cycling 100km+ and regularly clocking up 50 to 60km per week on his balcony in Melbourne.

And that’s what I want people to understand.

Performance isn’t just about running marathons, completing Ironmans or racing HYROX.

It’s about building the physical and mental capacity to handle whatever everyday life throws at you.

To take on more responsibility, deal with challenging situations and still have something left in the tank for the people who matter most.

I’m not interested in the 8 to 12 week transformations.

Watching someone commit to a process, stay consistent and completely change the trajectory of their life over 18 months?

That’s where it’s truly at for me.

The smile says it all, mate. Incredibly proud of you.

And remember…

Don’t complain about having a lot on your plate when you said you wanted to eat.

What is culture?

To me, culture drives everything in a sporting setting, business, family and is the driving force behind success.

I’ve been fortunate enough to coach JJB for the last 3 years inside the EDA programme, but it’s always time well spent when we get our heads together.

He played in the best Super League team ever and has achieved everything you can in the game of rugby league, and much of the success of that team was infact the culture they had in place.

Culture drives standards.
