Wenyu Yang (Joyce) is a contemporary visual artist based in London. She graduated from Nankai University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is currently studying Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art. Her artistic practice is grounded in philosophical, psychological, and anthropological inquiry, with particular reference to the theories and writings of Michel Foucault, Jacques Lacan, and Oliver Sacks. Working through cross-media and interdisciplinary approaches—including literature and film, moving image, photography, installation, and performance—Joyce investigates the politics of historical memory and archival structures, power relations and the formation of identity, as well as questions surrounding artificial intelligence, posthumanism, queer theory, and feminism.

Mixed-media installation with found images, acetate prints, mirror board, wooden shelf, embroidered ribbon, hairpins, and an inserted mixed-media component (foam board, cotton thread, copper wire, binder clip, and paper clips).

A collection of over 6,000 words bringing together 20 poems, 2 prose pieces, 2 short fiction works, and an afterword. Written, typeset, designed, printed, and assembled by me.

My first time making a book by hand, there are still some imperfect details, still in the process of figuring it out.🌱😊

Installation of 9 framed digital collages on paper, vintage wooden box, magnifying glass

This work responds closely to NEXT TO ≠ REAL’s central question of how images shape reality. By collaging official archival documents with vintage family photographs, Wenyu Yang exposes how supposedly neutral records are already shaped by power, classification, and exclusion.

Through this fictional archive, Fitter Families asks how reality is not simply found, but produced through images and institutional histories.
