POSTS STORIES REELS

Classes continue throughout November with Pay What You Can.
I love sharing this gift.
Come vibe and move with me. by @joymovementproject

Somatics is the study of the conscious universe within us. With a focus on internal experience and guided movement, this somatic dance class offers a space to explore, play, notice, sense, and discover.

In this 90 min class, we will dip into anatomy, emotions, and awareness through movement and dance. Joy and curiosity is at the center.

Where and when?
- Class takes place in the rehearsal hall of Greenville Theatre:
444 College St
Greenville, SC 29601
Mcalla Hall - located in the back of the building
- Every Thursday, 9:00am to 10:30am
- PAY WHAT YOU CAN for the month of October!!

What is Somatics?
- It is a field of study that uses the mind-body connection to notice internal experiences, perceptions, and sensations.
- The term was coined by Thomas Hanna in 1970 and is used in different types of physical therapy, dance, and breath/bodywork.

Why Somatics?
- Somatic dance can improve mental health by increasing bodily awareness through authentic movement.
- It offers the possibility of a deeper state of self awareness that supports autonomy and agency.

About Helen Joy (they/she):
Born and raised in England, Helen Joy has been dancing since the age of 3. Her earliest dance training helped establish a strong foundation with a focus on ballet, modern, and jazz. They continued their professional training in London where she received her BA in Professional Dance and Performance. In 2022, Helen Joy received their MFA in Dance at Saint Mary’s College of California where she studied with leaders in the Somatic Dance Education community such as Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, Sondra Fraleigh, and Dr. Martha Eddy.
They now are the resident dance professor at Furman University where they are thrilled to be guiding students in discovering musical theatre dance, technique, and somatics. She is passionate about all elements of dance as a social/cultural experience as well as performative.
Helen Joy’s varied experiences guide their work along with an expansive interest in the somatic components of transformation from trauma. Her artistic focus is to present the worth of the dancer as a whole human life, all its imperfections, and challenges. Joy is always at the cent by @joymovementproject

Helen Joy created this authentic expression of love to celebrate the life and legacy of her dad, Stuart Brunson.

Filmed at their childhood home in Farnborough, Hampshire, Helen Joy used the space and essence of their family to inspire the movement in this piece.

Joy encapsulates so much more than "feeling happy". For me, it is a living energy that radiates from those who know their worth.
Which is all of you!

We radiate JOY from a place of self-love, reflection, and intentional love.

At JOY movement project, we value the following:

Joy in Inclusivity - giving all people a safe place to belong

Joy in Diversity - when we magnify the marginalized, all lives are enriched

Joy in Shifting perceptions - embracing change as the only constant in life

Joy in Humility - humble minds and hearts ground us in alive community

Joy in Humanity - all humans are messy and beautiful

A big joyful welcome to JOY movement project!
Let me introduce myself...

My name is Helen Joy and I am the Artistic Director for my new movement company. A British native living in Greenville with my cute lil family, I've been moving and dancing around the world for 30 years. After recently completing my MFA in Dance, I grew passionate about what dance and movement look like in my community. I feel strongly that dance is not an elitist art form and that it is for EVERYONE to enjoy and partake in.

Follow me as I share dance and movement with the Upstate SC community and bloom this art form into an immersive, interactive, and accessible experience for ALL.
