Let's play "Grab the Camera Man"! Singapore, 2026. by @jslbtoy
A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting on a bench seeking shelter from the rain in a HDB estate and there was a young boy playing with his friend next to me. He was yelling and jumping as boys tend to do but I have nephews so my noise tolerance has increased. Some time passed and I started fidgeting with the camera. The boy came over and said hello and asked who I was working for. I thought that was a rather strange question for a kid no older than 8 years old to ask a stranger. Anyway, I went into the whole spiel of how I am taking photos of older estates which my mouth auto-repeats nowadays when people ask. I asked him if there are things around which I should take photos of and he shared a few areas nearby and the time which I should come at, like 5PM on Thursdays when there is a usual group of people playing Sepak Takraw. The boy who had been yelling for the past few minutes now seemed like a young adult in terms of how he was communicating. I thanked him and asked if I could take a photo of him. He replied saying he cannot appear in photos as he is under MSF care and stays in a children's home. He told me to take a photo of his friend instead. At that moment in time I could not understand the reason but instinctively I asked his friend if he would like me to take a photo of him alone. His friend enthusiastically said yes and asked a few questions like whether the photo only stays in the camera and can it be printed. I spent a few more minutes with them before the rain subsided. As I was making my way home that day, the possible reasons for not being able to appear in photos came up in my mind and the conversations have stayed with me for a while now. So I seek your understanding if I do not share locations of the estates so freely anymore in the future. Anyway thanks for reading and here are some photos of the hazy days of a random estate. by @jslbtoy
