Meet the jury behind this year’s festival selection, introducing Juan Hein!
Juan Hein is an Argentine-Danish visual artist, born in Buenos Aires and based in Copenhagen. Working across photography and video, bookmaking and installation, his practice explores identity, cultural theory and visual perception. His work moves between narrative and conceptual approaches, exploring how images create or interfere meaning, challenge conditions of cultural heritage and so the actual experience of the now.

Colleague and photographer @juan_hein paid me a studio visit and brought his large format camera. I had to sit very still for the long exposures and the result is the most beautiful colors and grainy texture that only analogue film can produce. by @juanhein_new

Javier Orozco, writer and translator, at the entrance of his building in Nørrebro, Copenhagen, May 2026.

When Javier talks, he seems to be writing his words. We met with Javier a couple of years ago through another "expat" writer, Majo Moirón (the intense pregnant woman in this series). I immediately thought that if the concept of "photogenic" would exist, then Javier's look would match as a great example. But to talk with Javier is the great experience. In this opportunity, on the way to make the portrait, we talked about "translation" and how in literature every case becomes as important as the translator own work. Our exchange remembered Julio Cortázar whose translations of Edgard Allan Poe' stories, became so important as almost part of his own production as a writer. As a spanish-language-reader of Poe, one reads Cortázar at the same time. Then I thought that exactly the same happens in photographic portraiture where the sitter becomes somehow part of a self portrait by the photographer. We are just reading and translating and defining our identity through the existence of the other.

Mike Sheridan, musician, Nørrebro, Copenhagen, 2026.

We met with Mike at the gallery Simian on a magical evening full of great performances and music. We shared a great talk about music and contemporary art, language and dance, with a beer and then another one. Ten days after, we arranged to make some portraits together. I came to his place in Nørrebro at 19.30ish as planned and he was preparing a "southern inspired stew" to warm up the meeting, with a starter with some pinchos with anchovies and chilies and a Check beer. He told me that one of his first passions was photography but then music was flowing. Thanks God! Then we found out that both got inherited from our fathers the same first introductory photography book, the classic 70's The Photographer's Handbook by John Hedgecoe, which he took out from his shelves. Then I pushed him to make the first photo in front of his machines because the light was fading away very quickly for an interior scene (nr. 2), which finished being one full of atmosphere. So we ate that delicious "southern inspired stew" and around 21 we took a round in the hood and made some more pictures.

Mike is presenting his new album "Touch" in the great venue Alice in Nørrebro, on Thursday September 10th. My heart beat turns faster. by @juanhein_new

Untitled (from the series Plants in the cemetery, 2024-ongoing).

This series was born with the need of reflecting on the co-existence of light and shadow in life. It is performed through the park-like cemetery of Assistens Kirkegaard in the area of Nørrebro, in Copenhagen, where there are more than 150 different species of plants. Upon to the authorities of the cemetery most of the species are not native and have been imported in order to recreate a sort of "little paradise" feeling. by @juanhein_new

Untitled (horse monument), from the series The Danish Triangle (Den danske trekant), Argentina, 2025-2026. Ongoing.

This is the monument to El Zorro, a tordillo horse which became a legend in the area of Tres Arroyos, known for having been untamed in 157 rodeos in the beginning of 1970's. by @juanhein_new
