I have been waiting to post this...

I am a first-generation Filipino-American. My parents were both born in the Philippines and traveled here by way of the U.S. Navy.

As a brown-skinned woman who grew up in a society where conformity is the expectation—paired with an ancestral culture that has long prized docility, quiet grace, and keeping self-expression heavily guarded—this piece is my love letter.

In Philippine mythology, the Aswang is a creature of terrifying duality: by day, she walks among us as a seemingly ordinary woman; by night, she departs from her body to feed on our deepest fears.

And that is precisely what this photoshoot represents: the profound duality of the Filipina-American woman. We navigate the heavy expectations of a collectivist culture while striving to survive and breathe in an individualistic society.

To My Lola, Mama, Titas, Nieces, and daughters:

Remember the struggle. Remember your roots. Know that it is more than okay to honor your past while unapologetically being you, right now. Our ancestors—with all their stories, experiences, and fierce resilience—have brought us forth. And that, my love... is the duality of the Filipino-American experience

Celebrating 25 years of teaching! Grateful for the students, colleagues, and countless memories that have shaped this journey. Making a difference, one student at a time! It takes a village to raise a chief.

I created this Flying Lotus Piece years ago, and it’s traveled with me through Asian cultural festivals, my first show at Project Reo Collective, FilAm festivals, and the @cvartfest

I’ve kept revamping it, while inviting the community to sign it and become part of the art.

Mankind’s Existence is God’s Art. 🙏🏽

Thank you to everyone who left their mark. Your essence remains throughout the layers of paint. 🌸 #paradiseiz @filamfest @asianculturalfestival by @junglevillagechief

“Children are a heritage from the LORD, offspring a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them.”
