What if someone helped shape the Civil Rights Movement, advised Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., broke business barriers, and played a crucial role in international diplomacy...yet their name was largely lost to history?

Join the @iaamuseum - Center for Family History (CFH) for an online podcast deep-dive into the remarkable, untold life of Cirilo McSween — an Afro-Latino entrepreneur, civil rights leader, and confidant to Dr. King.

As part of CFH’s Untold African American Stories podast, they will be sitting down with documentary producer Justin O Cooper to explore the making of “CIRILO: A Legacy Untold” and the archival detective work required to bring extraordinary Black histories back into the light.

I’m pleased to share that I’ll be joining Dr. Shelley V. Murphy and the International African American Museum’s Center for Family History for a virtual conversation about CIRILO: A Legacy Untold and the remarkable life of Cirilo McSween.

Why Cirilo Matters: History, Identity, and a Legacy Rediscovered

Cirilo was a Panamanian-born Afro-Latino entrepreneur, civil rights leader, and global strategist whose influence stretched from the American civil rights movement to international diplomacy.

We’ll discuss how I researched, preserved, and brought his story to the screen, while exploring why recovering overlooked histories like his continues to matter.

Saturday, October 17
1 PM ET / 10 AM PT
Live on YouTube @ iaamuseum + Facebook @ IAAMuseum

Grateful to IAAM for creating space for this conversation and for Cirilo’s legacy.

For the archives: On Monday, October 5, 2026, Donald Trump, the 47th president of the United States, said at a rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, while discussing the war with Iran: “Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego. This is a very small price to pay.”

Members of the crowd cheered and applauded.

As a trained journalist and archivist, I am documenting these remarks for the record.

“To have the film recognized during awards season and embraced by institutions like Pan African Film Festival and the NAACP underscores the power of stories that connect history, culture, and global identity.” - Justin O. Cooper, writer, director, and editor of CIRILO

Recognized by NAACP Image Awards®️, Pan African Film Festival, SAN ANTONIO BLACK INTL FILM FESTIVAL, and more, CIRILO, A Legacy Untold is making waves in the film industry. It’s not just a documentary about Cirilo McSween’s legacy; it’s a film about resilience. A full-circle moment.

From studying Film & Television Development and Film Editing at UCLA Extension to building the projects I once went there to learn how to develop and make.

Grateful to UCLA Alumni for featuring my journey in Class Notes, including CIRILO, A Legacy Untold and my recent work on Vanessa Bell Calloway’s Beverly, Evelyn, Gloria & Willa...Still Standing arriving on the film festival circuit in 2027

Feel like you should be further along?

Jon Chaffin (Snowfall, BMF, Diarra From Detroit) opens up to Royal Ervin about self-doubt, side jobs, and keeping the dream alive.

Proud to executive produce, edit, and oversee post-production for the series.

Two things are constant truths: time moves fast, and it brings change.

I remember my first trip to LA, taking a guided tour of the Paramount lot as a tourist. More than a decade later, Los Angeles is home, and I’m now taking meetings on studio lots across town, discussing where films can shoot internationally and continuing to build projects of my own.

The journey has taken me from PA, to location and site representative, to international film commission and production services consulting, to producer, director, and editor. Along the way came my award-winning documentary CIRILO, A Legacy Untold, and an NAACP Image Award nomination.

Next up, a new documentary I helped produce for Vanessa Bell Calloway, while also editing the film and overseeing post-production, heads to the film festival circuit in 2027. At the same time, I’m continuing to develop other projects, including one I’m preparing to produce and direct.

Walking the FOX Lot today was a reminder of just how much can change between where you start and where the journey takes you.

Still building. Still growing. Still moving forward. by @justinocooper
