An honor and a privilege to be an invited guest of the Ethiopian Crown Council, H.I.H. Prince Ermais Sahle Selassie at the @abyssinianbc .

This sanctuary holds a deeply personal place in my own spiritual and academic journey. Nearly two decades ago, as an undergraduate student researcher at CUNY Brooklyn College, I first walked through these doors. I had the profound honor of serving under Dr. Genna Rae McNeil, conducting archival research for her monumental book, Witness: Two Hundred Years of African-American Faith and Practice at the Abyssinian Baptist Church. Immersing myself in thesearchives as well as the Schomburgs , I didn’t just study history; I felt the pulse of a living, breathing covenant. I learned firsthand how this church has consistently stood as a beacon of resistance, self-determination, and global African solidarity.

Harlem has long served as the beating heart of Pan-African consciousness. It was here that our ancestors gathered to reject degradation, choosing instead to lift their eyes to the hills of Ethiopia. When fascist forces attempted to trample the ancient Christian empire of the Solomonic Dynasty, it was right here in Harlem where the faithful mobilized, sending support to their brothers and sisters across the waters, unified under the banner of the Ethiopian World Federation in 1937.

This sacred bond was forever sealed in blood and spirit during the historic 1954 State Visit of His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Haile Selassie I. When His Majesty stood in this very city and presented the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo processional cross to the Reverend Adam Clayton Powell Jr., it was not merely a diplomatic exchange. It was an institutional coronation of shared faith, a physical anchor linking the heritage of the African diaspora directly to the throne of David.

So we give thanks for the commemoration.

Big respect to Empress Jahnanna and the @globalrastafari conference for inviting me to Dr. Samuel Cruz’ class @unionseminary “African Religions in America.”

Today’s Assistant Instructor was Ras Jahwanza Rand.
Wonderful conversations with the students in the class about Rastafari:

*Ark of the Covenant
*Post Christian Movement
*CIA operatives in the movement as well as the classroom
*Claudius Henry
*Empress Menen
As well as reading passages from Chanting Down Babylon: the Rastafari Reader

Although I’m a prospective M.Div student and a guest in the class—both Professor Cruz and Instructor Rand allowed InI space to teach.

Big 2 not the Little 1! The #Dawta dem’ by @justlikea_shumba

Before the global rise of Rastafari in Jamaica, a powerful Ethiopian-centered movement was already taking shape among Black Americans in Chicago. 🇪🇹✊🏿

This 4-part series explores the 1919–1920 Chicago prophetic movement—from the arrival of the Abyssinian Mission and the teachings of Rev. James Morris Webb, to Grover Cleveland Redding and the Star Order of Ethiopia. These movements connected biblical prophecy, African sovereignty, Ethiopian identity, allegiance to Ras Tafari Makonnen, and the dream of physical repatriation.

The history invites us to look deeper at the relationship between Black America, Ethiopia, Pan-Africanism, and the emergence of Ras Tafari consciousness in the early 20th century. Jamaica would later become the spiritual center of a worldwide movement, but Chicago reveals an important earlier chapter in the story.

Study the history. Trace the connections. Remember Ethiopia. 🇪🇹

The 1940 Newspaper Article That Rewrites Rastafari Origins

Featuring: Featuring: Chaplain Ras Floyd Jarvis

The conventional historical narrative that Rastafari originated exclusively within Jamaica. Referencing the November 23, 1940, issue of the Jamaica Daily Gleaner, the segment highlights a direct quote from Leonard P. Howell, widely revered as the founding father of the movement. Howell stated that after his international travels and return to the United States, he became attracted to the "Rastafari Aites" and subsequently returned home to Jamaica to preach its tenets. by @justlikea_shumba
