WHY CHICAGO? | Chicago through Latin American Voices What makes Chicago an important place for the development of Latin American contemporary art? From its museums and galleries to its independent spaces, artist-led initiatives and collecting community, Chicago is home to a growing network of people shaping meaningful conversations around contemporary art and culture. But beyond its institutions, what makes the city’s ecosystem distinctive? How are artists, curators, collectors and cultural practitioners building connections, creating opportunities and contributing to its evolving artistic landscape? Chicago through Latin American Voices brings together perspectives from across the city’s art community to explore these questions and consider what lies ahead for Latin American art in Chicago. Through this series, we ask: Why Chicago? What makes this ecosystem distinctive, and what opportunities are emerging? A conversation about community, collaboration and the connections shaping the future of Latin American contemporary art. 🏛️First MUSEUM exhibition 💫 at @mcasandiego opening next Saturday September 19th! Visiones Nocturnas: Queer Nightlife in Contemporary Art examines artworks that explore a variety of physical environments—dance clubs, dive bars, backyards and bathhouses—as critical sites of queer joy, collectivity, and possibility. Visiones Nocturnas, or “night visions,” takes its title from the work of Andres Payan Estrada, whose project draws on a decade of photographic research into facets of queer nightlife along the U.S./Mexico border. Thank you so much Amy Crum @crummy_disposition for curating me along with so many of my idols and dear contemporaries 🤎 Check out 5 of my paintings in the show! Escalera 2026 Oil on canvas 22x24 in. 🎱Eight-ball🎱 This painting was commissioned by the Becker Friedman Institute for Economics @beckerfriedman at the University of Chicago. Artists were asked to find inspiration in essays by UChicago economists and my painting responds to Richard Thaler’s essay “Towards a Positive Theory of Consumer Choice.” It will permanently hang in the collection at the Becker Friedman Institute on campus.
