notes on my voice… by @jwill.adams
ALBERTA FIRE MASK. it looks like a stop sign because it is a stop sign. wildfire is how the land tells us to stop. it is also the plains cree word for fire: ᐃᐢᑯᑌᐤ #iskotew @alberta_ucp STOP choking us. STOP resource extraction. @abdaniellesmith STOP the climate change denial. STOP defunding Alberta Wildfire programs. STOP disrespecting the land and water. STOP making excuses. listen to indigenous voices. you are guests here. #landback by @jwill.adams
awâsisîwiwin [childhood] for a project with @tysonhouseman beadwork graphic score alpine self portrait ii 11/0 seed beads c-print [1996] by @jwill.adams
alpine self portrait 1 beadwork graphic score 11/0 glass seed beads 4x6 c-print [1996] this is a kind of tactile spectrogram honouring non-human voices of the land and water as they exist in my childhood memory [mostly through screens], as they exist in the memory of rock [in fossil form], as they exist in the memory of glacial ice, as they exist in the emotion of this photo taken when i was 6 years old. i have returned often to this spot in jasper national park over the years. made for a project with the great vocal improviser @sopranoise in mind. by @jwill.adams

wanuskewin beadwork graphic score 11/0 glass seed beads 4x6 c-print [1994] wanuskewin roughly translates to “seeking peace of mind” in plains cree. i’ve been experimenting with beads and tactility in graphic notation. this is my first musical score. grateful especially to @jessetheplessis + @sopranoise + @bufflo.prod for encouraging me to work with sound and handicraft in new ways. dreamt up for a project with friends, with the plains at heart. by @jwill.adams

LAMENT 25.09.2024 film: Tyson Houseman @tysonhouseman flute/composer: Jessica Sparvier-Wells @indigenousflutist Manitoba Chamber Orchestra @mcocanada conductor: Anne Manson photos: PJ Jordan Some still images from LAMENT - a concert I had the honour of curating and performing in at the University of Manitoba’s newly opened Desautels Concert Hall in September. Singing Jessica’s songs alongside some other music very dear to my heart, supported and illuminated by Tyson’s live and prerecorded film was an experience beyond words. Thank you to @seanjmcmanus + Anne and the whole MCO team for trusting my vision and offering your generous sprits to this project. by @jwill.adams
