When I first got into dog training, my goal was simple: give my dog the happiest, healthiest, safest, most fulfilling life I could.

That hasn’t changed.

What I didn’t expect was how personal the journey would become… Every lesson has been rewarding, challenging, and humbling in its own way. I started out wanting to teach my dog how to make better choices, communicate, and navigate the world with confidence 🐾 Along the way I realized how much I was learning, too. Patience. Consistency. Communication. Confidence. And a whole lot of self-awareness! 💪

Where training meets everyday life ☕️ We practise so we don’t cry over spilled milk.

A coffee run puts those little practice sessions to use:
• Walking together on a loose leash
• Keeping pace as we move
• Passing distractions on the way

I’ll go first: ACTING 🎭

Say you’re naturally quiet, or exhausted after work, or have a hundred things on your mind. Your dog still depends on you to show up with patience, clear communication, and intention. Sometimes that means bringing more enthusiasm than you feel, making silly voices, exaggerating your movements, or being more firm than you’d naturally default to. Acting like you’ve still got some energy left, like that little win deserves a whole celebration, like you’re calm and collected while your brain has seventeen tabs open 😬

Matching your delivery to what your dog needs in that moment takes practice AND sometimes a little acting 😂

👇 Trainers, what’s an underrated skill you’d add?

Using a familiar skill to practise around something less familiar. Place gives a clear expectation while we work around the mower’s sound and movement.

What we’re working on:
• Holding position around distractions
• Getting familiar with sound and movement
• Letting activity happen without joining in
• Reinforcing those skills with rewards along the way

Everyday life gives us plenty to work with.
A little yard work + a little training.

Building confidence doesn’t have to involve anything crazy… It’s as simple as getting your dog onto a different surface. The goal is to introduce manageable challenges and build on those little wins!! PRESSURE MAKES DIAMONDS 💪

This can challenge their balance, coordination and body awareness. It also gives them an opportunity to work through a little uncertainty and realize they’re capable of more than they think.

A little structure goes a long way!! Thresholds are an easy way to practice impulse control in everyday moments. The door can open without it automatically meaning go… Pause. Wait. Release.

Clear expectations, more freedom 💙

Verdict: Thomas was not a threat 🚂

The goal isn’t for him to love every loud, weird, moving thing in the world. It’s just to learn that he can notice it, feel unsure, and still be okay.

Yesterday, I completed my Pet First Aid course with Walks ‘N’ Wags Pet First Aid through Peninsula Pet First Aid, taught by Doug at the Burlington Humane Society.

Hopefully I never have to use most of what I learned 😅 but having the knowledge, prep + more confidence to respond if something does happen gives me a lot of peace of mind. And as always, another reminder that there is so much to keep learning!

Thank you Walks ‘N’ Wags Pet First Aid, Peninsula Pet First Aid + Burlington Humane Society 💙

Life gets busy, but our dogs still need their walks, attention, enrichment + time to just be dogs.

I know how big of a deal it is to trust someone else with your dog. That’s why good communication, consistency, safety + genuinely caring for the dog in front of me matter so much!

Teaching Benji that there is a time and a place to be dramatic, and construction guys doing their job behind a fence is not it 😂

When we come across something that’s not exactly Benji’s fav, and we have enough safe distance, we slow down and observe… No rushing past it. Don’t make it a big deal. Just hang out and give him a chance to take it in.

Doing nothing in that moment can actually be the work. Over time, it helps show him that the noise, movement and chaos around him doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong 💪
