Wegz sits comfortably at the top of the game and he knows it. Years of consistent releases from the heart of Alexandria’s rap scene, which slowly crossed over into Egyptian pop culture have set him head and shoulders above his contemporaries. But where does he go from here? In our latest cover story for Dazed MENA’s September issue photographed by @K_frawy he speaks candidly to @GhonemJR about his newest album ‘Aqareb’, the pressure to evolve, and what success looks like when you’ve already made it. • Many young subcultures in Cairo are thriving more than ever lately. Across music, sports, dance, it’s hard to keep track of everything new coming up everyday. However not everything is completely new, some cultures have existed for way longer than you’d expect. Take skating for example. Over the last few years, it’s gained major popularity amongst the youth, enough to bring in companies like Redbull to organize competitions and push the sport forward. Local streetwear brands have been collaborating with skaters, us included, on content and creating connections with them. Whether it’s just for the hype or genuine passion for the culture, the spotlight is on skating. Actually, it’s more accurate to say that the spotlight is FINALLY on skating. We sat down with Mohamed Mamdouh Kamel, credited by many for bringing skating to Egypt, to discuss how far back has this sport been around in Egypt and how much it has evolved through the years. 💡How do you approach a subject without arriving with a predetermined image of it? As part of the open studio and public program in Cairo on Saturday, 7 November, Dazed MENA presents a dedicated panel discussion: ‘How to Make an Image Beyond the Obvious’. Moderated by Dazed MENA Photo Editor Fatima Mourad (@fatimamouradd), the conversation includes photographer Omar El Kafrawy (@k_frawy) and producer Monica Abadir (@monicaabadir). Together, they will explore visual clichés, representation, and the responsibility of making images faithfully in a place often photographed through a narrow set of references. From developing a visual idea to navigating locations, production, access, and cultural context, the panel examines what it takes to make a photograph today, especially in Egypt. @dazedmiddleeast is a media partner of the program in Cairo. “Partnering with World Press Photo allows us to champion the powerful, honest voices documenting our shared humanity. With the Joop Swart Masterclass being held in Cairo this year, a city of endless stories, Dazed MENA’s association reflects our commitment to uplift image-makers both local and around the world far beyond traditional creative boundaries.” says Ahmad Swaid, Editor-in-Chief of Dazed MENA. “At its heart, photography is truth, and together, Dazed MENA and WPP ensure these vital stories are felt, seen, and heard.” 🔗 This session is part of the Open Studio and Public Program in Cairo. @wegzofficial steps into a slower, more considered visual world for “El Ayah”, his latest release directed by @K_frawy, produced and art director by @MonicaAbadir and shot by DOP Osama @Cornawy. Filmed inside architect Sayed Karim’s modernist Maadi villa, the video sees Wegz and @husseingamalllll inhabit the space as two artists working through the aftermath of a love story, surrounded by instruments, notebooks and a song taking shape. 📸 @aligphy by @k_frawy

Car crashes on Mehwar, Nasr City suburbs, and the Greek Club, this is Cairo According to: Kafrawy. If Omar Kafrawy knows one thing, it’s how to find the cool, and make it even cooler. Crafting his path from within the city’s rap scene, the photographer and filmmaker once shot a portrait of Wegz for Dazed MENA, a video of Ziad Zaza for GQ, and a video portrait of Abyusif for… the hell of it, really. And like the artists he documents, Kafrawy’s work is rich with the pulse of the city, teetering between surrealism and gritty, grimy reality. So that left us wondering: what’s Kafrawy’s Cairo? Here, he tells us about the time he crashed his car trying to photograph the sunset on mehwar, makes the case for a statue of Abyusif, and wonders aloud if CairoScene is trying to take him on a date. To read more of ‘Cairo According to’, head to our highlights or go to www.SceneNow.com (link in bio). by @k_frawy
