When I wrote the first draft of Born on a Thursday, my own circumstances weren’t totally unlike April’s in the play. My life had stumbled into an unexpected in-between. I felt I’d false started several times, I was back living at my dad’s, and I didn’t have a clue what I was supposed to be doing with myself.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Having rejected the offer of a conventional bedroom, I spent most of my time in the small insulated room tacked onto Dad’s work shed, sleeping on an old futon by night and writing the first iteration of the play by day. The room was breathless. It had one small window I’d only ever crack when the January heat took me to the brink and I was forced to choose the rattle of passing trains over passing out.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ If the resulting play has tried to say anything, it’s that ordinary life carries extraordinary weight. Trauma doesn’t eclipse the mundane; it lives beside it. To endure is its own kind of grace. Love, if we’re doing it right, is unconditional. And the so-called regular Australian life is worthy of deep poetic attention. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Really though, this is just a play about regular folk getting by. To some, that amount of story will never quite scratch the theatrical itch. To others, it’s all there really is. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Thank you to Lucy Clements and Emma Wright for plucking a bulky script by some random bloke off a pile and taking a punt; to Mary Rachel Brown for giving this thoroughly untrained playwright some much-needed dramaturgical support; to my cast of five friends who have given more than I could possibly return; to our technicians for their craft; our audiences for their generosity; to my old man for never pressuring me to put on a tie.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ And to all who left the theatre saying “I know those (fictional) people”, to you I say, I believe you. Maybe they lived across the street. Maybe they raised you. Maybe they cracked the window one January when you needed a little air.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 📷 Phil Erbacher by @kackjearney

We were an unusual trio. Two brothers and a bloke forty-odd years our senior with a crude turn of phrase and a penchant for the deadlier things in life. When Hooter first came into our lives it was as our father’s long-time best mate. On Sunday, when he said goodbye, he did so as ours. The bloke was one of one. Truly. It feels like the done thing to send off the dead with earnest proclamations of one’s rareness; who’s to say how much of it’s just lip service. But here, it seems undeniable. In a world of same-sameness Hooter was a genuine rare unit. His trademark rasp, his unmatched eloquence, his ability to drink a crowd under a table and be up at first light for his morning stroll all pale in comparison to the man’s defining offering: time. That was what he gave you. When he asked for your name, you told him it once. When you spoke to him he was both really listening and actually interested. Time in his company was a priceless gift and the two of us received more than anyone deserved. Ta ta old cock. You’ve earned a nap. by @kackjearney
