Gay !!!!!
.
I’ve been routinely asked why I present so forwardly as gay, as queer, why I kissed girls in music videos, call on queer audiences when presenting my music or define my sound with “alt-gay grief rock” when it’s “unnecessary” or “dilutes my potential audience” or just simply seems irrelevant to my music, my artistry
.
The truth, my truth, is completely opposite. I have become a public facing, self promoting, (shamefully) shameless artist because I am no longer afraid of the parts of me I’ve been told my entire life are best kept hidden
I am no longer holding back on the experiences I want to have in my life because of something society has told me isn’t “right”, isn’t appropriate, because of something my catholic upbringing has condemned to ~literal hell~ (kinda dramatic ?)
.
Out of all the Atlanta prides I’ve experienced, the softness and sweetness and queer joy that I felt this year without the parks and parades and outfits and celebratory uproar and dancing and playing was perhaps the more grounding place to stand with my own queerness. It was soft and slow and steady and an opportunity to show immense gratitude for the queer people before me who have created a world where I get to move and act in alignment with my heart.
.
I am loud about it because I can be. I am loud about it because I for much too long shushed that kid inside of me that grew up to doubt everything about herself because she was told that what she fundamentally loved was wrong, damnable. Where I saw kids and communities harmed and threatened, ridiculed and struck down for daring to love out loud.
.
There is still so much work to be done, so much progress to be made, so much more of the fight to be fought. But for the weekend, I got to sit in the softness of everything I denied myself based on the determinations of any and everyone but ME
.
my queer joy is getting to not only live and love, but create and sing and write and push out as I am. Which is pretty fckn gay 🌟
.
I encourage you all to live as u are. It’s so not worth the effort of dragging urself out of the hole you let them dig for you 🌬️🦋

I’ve spent more time than I’d like to admit believing that I wasn’t what anyone could want, and if I pushed them away then at least I could control how they left ?

This song is about telling others to leave, and then resenting them for listening. About confusing self-abandonment with self-protection, a devious sink into the blatancy of the victim complex.

Today, I get to let it go!

“You could just” is out now. I hope u find a piece of yourself in it <3
