I’ve always liked a good vantage point.

Trees, rooftops, airplane windows, conversations with people who’ve lived entirely different lives from mine…

Anything that reminds me there’s more than one way to see the world.

I have a habit of getting interested in things and following them a little further than I intended. Sometimes that turns into a project or a plane ticket or sometimes a completely unnecessary amount of research into something I discovered three hours ago.

I’ve made peace with being this way.

And I hope I’m still climbing when I’m eighty.

Me, appreciating the ocean a little more after reading about recent deep-sea mining initiatives and realizing humanity managed to find one of the last relatively untouched places on Earth and immediately started figuring out how to make money from it.

Like, can we leave anything alone?

What’s interesting to me is how easy it is to forget that the ocean is doing an extraordinary amount of work just by existing.

It regulates our climate, absorbs carbon, feeds millions of people, and sustains entire ecosystems we’ve barely begun to understand. And most of us benefit from all of this without thinking about it for a second.

Meanwhile, there’s a whole conversation happening about extracting minerals from the deep seafloor, particularly in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, an enormous stretch of the Pacific between Hawai‘i and Mexico.

A place where scientists are still discovering species. Where ecosystems develop over millions of years. Where the consequences of disturbing the environment could outlast every single person making these decisions.

I don’t know. Maybe growing up on an island makes me a little more sentimental about the ocean, but I’ve always found it strange how easily we separate ourselves from the natural world when discussing what we can take from it.

As though the question of whether something is valuable has to be answered by figuring out what we can sell it for.

There’s something deeply unsettling about our ability to recognize how little we know about a place and still feel entitled to dismantle it.

Anyway, if you can’t reach me, I’m probably underwater appreciating what we’ve got while we’ve still got it. 🩵

And if I’m not, I’m thinking about getting back there.

If mangroves disappeared tomorrow, we’d lose so much more than trees.

We’d lose:

1. A natural shield. Mangroves reduce wave energy and help protect coastlines from storm surge, flooding, and erosion. They also benefit the 2.4 billion people who live within 100 km of the coast.

2. A nursery for marine life. More than 1,500 plant and animal species depend on mangroves, including many fish that spend the earliest part of their lives among mangrove roots.

3. A TRUE climate ally. Mangroves cover less than 1% of tropical forests, yet they’re among the most carbon-rich ecosystems on Earth. Under the right conditions, they can capture UP TO FIVE TIMES MORE more carbon than forests on land.

4. Cleaner oceans. Mangroves filter sediments and pollutants before they reach coral reefs and seagrass meadows, helping keep coastal waters healthier.

5. A future worth protecting. Healthy mangroves support fisheries, biodiversity, local economies, and climate resilience all at once. They’re one of those ecosystems that’s easy to overlook because it’s quietly doing its job every day.

Happy World Mangrove Day 🌿

If there is enough food and enough money, why are so many people still going without?

I spent the last few months helping bring A People’s Forum on Food, Land, Forests & Finance to life @climateweeknyc . At the center of it was the launch of Food, Land & Money, a report which asks that very simple question.

A lot of our day was about following that question back to who holds power over our food systems. Where is the money going? And what could change if more of it actually reached the people feeding their communities. (foodlandmoney.com)

Two days later was “Fall in Love with the Future”. That conversation started somewhere completely different as we let ourselves imagine what could happen if we actually got this right. What would life look like? How would we get there?

One event asked us to be clear about where we are. The other gave us space to think about where we could go.

Somewhere in between was our reception, a lot of really good conversations, new people, old friends, and a week that reminded me why I care about this work in the first place.

Very grateful to my team for the opportunity & to everyone that showed up to make a successful week of events come to life 🤎! by @kariel.danae

What’s something you’ve been impatient about lately? 🤍✨ by @kariel.danae

The Bahamas has been independent since 1973, and somehow the culture only gets sweeter with time.

From the way we is talk,
to the jokes we is crack,
to the riddim of da goatskin drum,
to the food that starts arguments over who makes it best (me 🙃).

In other words… we sweet bad 😝🇧🇸

We have a lot of work to do, but I owe my foundation to Home.

Happy 53rd birthday to my beautiful Bahamaland 🩵
