Tricky spaces. Every interior photographer has them. 📸

One of our community members asked this week if we could get together and talk through the spaces that still intimidate us. The response was so big we put a call on the calendar.

Tight bathrooms with no windows. Shower glass reflections. Blending a blown out window. Long narrow laundry rooms with nothing on the opposite wall. Shooting straight into the light. Sound familiar?

On Monday, our community is gathering for a roundtable where members bring an image they’re proud of from a tough space and share how they made it work. Stephen is bringing a few of his own oddballs too.

This is one of our favorite things about our community. Some of the best lessons don’t come from us at all. They come from members sharing what worked, what didn’t, and cheering each other on. So many photographers have told us they’ve learned just as much from these conversations and posts as they have from the course itself.

There are a lot of ways to get a great image. It’s a lot less scary when you have people to figure it out with. 🧡

Community members we realize the 100 spot limit filled fast and are working on what solution we can come up with to accommodate more. Stay tuned for another email and message. by @karlisch_workshops

For all you tethered shooters! Recently I destroyed my usb-c port on my Sony and it cost a ton to get fixed. Now I’m keeping the cord locked in place, even in transit with the @tethertools usb-c pigtail right angle adapter and the lever lock. I highly recommend protecting your port at all times. A damaged port can ruin a shoot, and dealing with having to send it off for a costly repair. Thank you Tether Tools for solving this problem, it’s exactly what I’ve been missing in my kit. by @karlisch_workshops

New to interior photography and wondering why your images don’t look like the ones in magazines?
It’s almost never your gear. When I started, I thought a better lens or more lights would fix everything. What actually changed my work was learning to slow down, watch how light moves through a space, and decide what’s truly worth photographing in that room.
Where you put the camera, and when, is the hardest thing to learn and the hardest thing to teach. It’s also what gets you hired.
Before you buy anything new, walk the room. Look. Then shoot.
Save this for your next shoot, and follow for more lessons from 25+ years of photographing interiors. by @karlisch_workshops

What if fall was your creative reset? 🍂

Parker J Pfister has a gift for pulling out the creativity you didn’t know was in you. This time of year it’s easy to begin to feel the diminishing spark of the artist that is within us. This conversation is a reminder that it’s still there.

Join Stephen and Parker this Friday, October 16 at 12:30pm CST for The Power of Play, all about curiosity, creativity, and finding your voice.

Check your email for registration details and grab your spot. We’d love to see you live!

"I've been waiting for something like this for the longest time"

@stephen_karlisch_photo keeps his GFX lenses, lens caps, color checker and phone right under the camera on a tethered studio shoot with the Tripod Hammock Pro. His TetherPro Optima cable rests on top and stays out of the way, and the whole thing snaps off when he needs to move.

Save this so your next setup is a little easier 📌

Nearly 30 years in the photo industry, and we’re still having fun on set together.
From our early days in fashion studios to documenting spaces like this recent shoot on Kiawah Island, working as a spouse duo has been an evolving masterclass in collaboration. Running a creative business together takes clear boundaries, supporting each other’s strengths, and helping each other navigate this industry every step of the way.
To all the photo duos and creative partners out there navigating the interiors world: keep lifting each other up and staying curious as artists.

In our workshops we teach the how and why’s to do things, use certain tools and techniques, and in the end learn how to play and have fun with shooting interiors. Never be afraid to explore a bad setup, because it might lead to an unexpected result or shine a light(😎) on something you haven’t considered. Push and pull constantly and this job becomes more of a journey of discovery about what you like, and sets you free to create a whole new world with your stamp on it. Go out and play!

Natural light shooters. Real estate & architectural photographers. Portrait & wedding artists pivoting to interiors. Today, you're all arriving here from across the country, different backgrounds, different goals, but unified by one thing: the commitment to learn, improve, validate or just be curious about interior photography and strengthen this industry together.

This isn't just a workshop. You're joining a network of working photographers who believe mastery and mentorship are inseparable. You're becoming part of a generational effort to elevate the craft, support your peers, and build a culture of quality and integrity in this field.

We're honored you're here. Let's make it a great workshop week and build something meaningful together.

My favorite old camera, the GFX680III, on that old tripod head now updated with an Arca Swiss.

Listen it’s easy to burn out in this industry, or just give up. It’s happened to me more times than I want to admit over a long career. Sometimes you have to dust some things off. Play. Shoot something else that fills your creative tank back up.

This isn’t about shooting film or being trendy. It’s about using tools or cameras that bring you joy, that make the process fun again. It’s kind of like retraining old muscles to do something new. You use a different camera, a different medium, and you see things differently. You create differently. And that difference is the whole point.

That might mean going to a workshop outside of what you do every day. Being around like minded people. Creating with a different medium. Whatever it takes to find that spark again, the reason you picked up a camera in the first place.

Go play. Have fun. Take some risks. Keep creating. Don’t let the everyday take you off your course. ✌🏼-SK by @karlisch_workshops
