really honored to have gotten the Emerging Journalist of the Year award from @coveringclimate alongside a couple of stellar international journalists whose work I can’t wait to read.

Ever grateful for my editors at @grist and @blueridgepublicradio for the opportunity to do the work I love to do and for everybody in southern Appalachia who answers the phone when I call no matter what strange questions I’m asking. by @katiemyerswrites

seven hundred years in the future a man and his daughters guard a toxic dump in what was once East Tennessee. Is nuclear waste the only god left? Maybe.

a play grappling with the long term future of nuclear waste, human spirituality, and communication breakdown. an eco tragedy of future past. Sort of King Lear adaptation but it’s not.

In BPR’s new series “Rethinking Resilience,” climate reporter Katie Myers and Helene Recovery reporter Laura Hackett meet people turning what they learned from the storm into something that can help their communities weather whatever comes next. That included everything from solar microgrids to chainsaw safety.

💬 Have you gotten involved in a community project since Helene, or picked up a new skill? Tell us about it in the comments.

so excited to announce the ***world premiere*** of Margaret and the Wampus Cat!

I wrote this play nine years ago when I was living in a tent on a farm. I’ve lived many different lives since then but I’m so grateful the good people at @mpctheatre - @rivernavaille & @toddsiffmusic - found reason to resurrect it from the dust pile of my play drafts.

Thank you to the original reading cast of friends in Knoxville, @cattywampuspuppetcouncil, and @dramatistsguild of East Tennessee for your support in readings many years ago.

If you’re in the Bay Area this fall, I hope you’ll join Margaret on her journey.

This is a queer fairytale set in today’s East Tennessee. There’s love and loss and vodka you drink from water bottles. There’s changeling children and granny witches. There’s church and Hardee’s and county commission meetings. There’s shape shifting and betrayal and food you shouldn’t eat unless you want to stay forever. So eat a little and stay with us.

Synopsis:

A restless teenager strays from her home in small-town East Tennessee to hunt a legendary monster.

Wendell Berry made his choices and stuck to them. He did not have a computer or a smartphone. He wrote more than 50 books of poetry, fiction, and essays, mostly with a pencil and paper, from his farmhouse in Henry County, Kentucky. By the time of his passing last week, the 92-year-old had lived many lives — as a farmer, teacher, philosopher, environmental activist — and inspired several generations of writers, farmers, and advocates in turn. From these varying perspectives, Berry grappled with humanity and the natural world.

Wrote a small piece on Berry at Grist & BPR - link in bio.

If you think this isn’t your grandmother’s end of summer heat, you’re right. And the way summer is changing, changes us in turn. For Grist, a whole bunch of us wrote about how the heat and unpredictability of summer is transforming our traditions and pastimes.

There are many wistful and lovely remembrances to be found in this collection. As for me. I wrote about puking from heat illness next to an East Tennessee onion field. by @katiemyerswrites

NPR had me on Dolly correspondent duty in Sevierville yesterday. Did I cry while writing this? Maybe by @katiemyerswrites

Opening night of @dogsongplay at sheATL Arts!!

I began this play during a period of unemployment, in residency at @dearbutte after a long artistic dry spell; I finished the first draft in community with the women & nonbinary writers of @primarystages Echoes Writers Group.

I wrote this play thinking about how hard it is to love people, to love your life, to love your choices; about dream and fantasy and what happens when you’re not as equipped to realize all that as you thought; about who sees life as a beautiful feast to relish and who sees it as a contest of self-denial.

Thank you to @tickettothemoon444 for your beautiful work directing it, to @yi_jia_yu_ for helping to steer the ship as co-producer and SM, to designers @t.odays and @theworldismypillow, to the incredible cast @_isabelhudson_ @ammar.ulhaq @shannon_dempsey @madelinecolombo_ @obieoutlaw, @constance3e , and to @sheatlarts for taking it on even though its producibility has been questioned on occasion (stage magic can do anything IMO but ya know).

The world of this mountain and the lost and heartbroken people who inhabit it has been so beautifully and effectively realized by this team.

So has the world of the nonhuman inhabitants, our neighbors in air and water and land. I hope anyone who sees or reads this play comes away with a sense of curiosity, humility, and respect for the other creatures who are crafting their survival out of the hodgepodge, sometimes hostile, and ever changing world of the Anthropocene.

Additional thanks in order to dramaturgs @shaunaturgy and @charissellick for your help polishing it up, and to @bethtrco for a lovely reading last month.

Get a first look at DOG SONG — Katie Myers' unsettling eco-horror about a young couple who thought off-grid living would be dreamy. (Spoiler: the landlady is mysterious, the rent is due, and the earth has *opinions.*)
