🇯🇵 When it comes to Japanese food, katsu is big and popular too—not just sushi 🍣, tempura 🍤, and Wagyu 🥩!

Katsu is meat covered in light, crispy panko breadcrumbs and fried until golden. ✨🔥

I’m at Katsu-Hama in NYC 🗽, a spot known for Japanese katsu and comfort food. @katsuhama_nyc

I ordered the chicken katsu curry 🍛🐔, the B set 🍱, and edamame 🫛 as an appetizer.

The edamame was warm, lightly salted, and fresh — simple, tasty, and perfect to start. 😋

Next was the shredded cabbage salad 🥬 — cool, crunchy, and refreshing, especially with the ginger dressing.

Then came the miso soup 🍲 — warm, savory, and comforting, with that classic Japanese umami flavor.

And finally, the star of the meal ⭐ — chicken katsu curry. 🍛🐔

The chicken had a light, golden crunch on the outside ✨ and was tender and juicy inside.

And if you know Japanese curry, you know it’s different — thick, rich, mild, and slightly sweet. 🍛

Add the Japanese white rice 🍚 and crispy chicken katsu, and every bite is pure comfort food. 🤤

Another thing I liked — everything came out hot 🔥, all at the same time, and within 20 minutes. ⏱️

Japanese pork katsu that takes me straight back to Japan, right in the heart of Midtown 🍱🇯🇵

@katsuhama_nyc is a no-frills Japanese spot specializing in pork katsu, and they might just be the masters of it. It is possibly the best I’ve had outside of Japan. The katsu is surprisingly light, not greasy at all, and I didn’t feel heavy/“yeet hay” after finishing the entire set.

I went on a weekday night and didn’t have to wait for a table. The restaurant has plenty of seating, though it felt a bit understaffed.

I wanted to try a bit of everything so I got one of their assorted sets, which came with pork loin, prawn, and shrimp cream croquette. I felt like this is a smart move as I was so amazed by how delicious the prawn and the croquette were, even though they specialize in pork. The prawn was HUGE, meaty and bouncy, while the croquette was creamy with bits of shrimp meat.

I personally prefer the pork loin over this berkshire pork loin, which was more expensive but somehow tougher than the pork loin. It was indeed meatier, but it was tougher. The curry though was surprisingly delicious. They didn’t only use store-bought curry cubes as I could taste bits of beef (?) in the curry.

** Set A comes with miso soup, cabbage salad, and potato salad, while Set B is about $2 cheaper and comes with everything except the potato salad.

@katsuhama_nyc has been our go-to tonkatsu spot for over a decade. This spot serves up some of the most authentic, mouthwatering tonkatsu in NYC: perfectly crispy, golden-fried pork cutlets that hit the spot every time.

Our go-to orders? I’m loyal to the Pork Tenderloin Cheese Hire-Katsu—melty, savory, and addictive. Meanwhile, @feedyourboyfriend swears by the Big Berkshire Loin Katsu, a hearty classic that never disappoints.

Each set comes with rice, miso soup, and a refreshing cabbage salad. You can choose between:

• Teishoku – the standard set
• Gozen – a more elevated version with an extra side (potato salad)

Check this place out!

There are sooo many Japanese restaurants in NYC.. these are the ones that you MUST check out, whether it’s for a date night or if you’re visiting and exploring the city!

Not in particular order:

1. Konban — highly recommend the Mazeman and Tenderloin katsu.
2. Katsu-Hama — most affordable option, katsu curry is a stable cozy meal
3. Honzen — Ryori set comes with fish of choice, rice bowl, and other side dishes including seasonal sashimi and uni tofu
4. Raku — this one is already super famous but don’t sleep on their comd udon!! I prefer it over the hot.
5. Sushi Beau — a new spot that recently opened! The kaisendon was fresh and flavorful.
6. Bar Adore — cozy Japanese wine bar with small bites, they have a live DJ every night.

tried this katsu spot in midtown. it’s a good price for the portion you get. the crusting of the katsus were really good. it was crunchy and super crispy. the meat on the other hand, did not seem like a great quality. it was a bit dry. the tonkatsu sauce made up for it with the flavor. maybe we didn’t get it on the right day but overall, this spot was just alright in our opinion.
