POSTS STORIES REELS

When you realize you need to delete 700 words because it was all pre pre pre setup 😅

I know this is a common writing habit, easing into the story before it actually begins. I thought I had gotten better at it, but apparently not quite.
So yes, I cut 700 words. And honestly, the story is stronger for it.
But it still stings a little.

There is something about deleting your own work that never fully gets easy, even when you know it is the right call.

The difference now is my mindset. I am not holding onto words just because I wrote them. I care more about the story being as strong as it can be.

I have definitely grown into a much more decisive editor, maybe even a bit ruthless.

But I am curious, how do you handle cutting your work to make it better?

Hi, I’m K.B. Steenstra. I’m a writer trying to get my books into your hands and I’m about to query my YA sci-fi novel.

In an empire that rewrites time to create an illusion of peace, a young empress must choose: preserve its lie or risk her empires collapse.

If this sounds interesting to you— like, comment, and follow. Every little thing adds up and helps me get one step closer to getting this book out there!

Stay tuned for more behind-the-scenes, writing tips, and what I’m reading! Writing a book too? Let’s be friends! Writing is so much better in community.

I’m reading through my novel right now, getting ready for take two of the query trenches! And as I’m reading I was thinking about some of the things that have inspired me the most 🥰

Every story has its beginnings and these are some of mine! What inspired your story?

Starting the read through this weekend. 🤭

But seriously, I had so many filler words in my novel and I picked up on a lot of bad habits I have! I use them and that WAY too much! by @kbsteenstra

My heart is so full after the first Down in the Drafts writing retreat 💖 I can’t express how happy I am this community brought us together.

So many funny stories coming out of this weekend 😂 Listening to that eccentric old lady almost get scammed on the train, wandering around a shopping center looking for the Marshall’s, irritating a horny ghost, happening upon the tiniest cemetery making Caitlyn’s eyes turn into literal hearts, recreating a scene to see if the position would work, our Twilight movie marathon, finding a strangely good Thai place in the middle of nowhere, staying up way too late to scream about Theo James, even the chaotic race to the train home.

Everything about this weekend was so amazing & the next one will be even better!

If you don’t know this yet…I’m a huge Scifi fan and my writing is very inspired by it. Here are some of my favorite movies! Two of them are based on short story/novels. Ever notice that scifi books make great movies? by @kbsteenstra
