✨The golden hour ✨ #cottonmillstudios #seedandsky #kelceyloomer #riverartsdistrictasheville by @kelceyloomer
I got to attend the grand reopening of @thevillagepotters today. Back in my old studio before the flood, they were a steady presence downstairs at Riverview Station. They were hit particularly hard in the flood with the weight of kilns, pottery, and equipment, moving everything in time just wasn’t possible. So to see them, a year and a half later, in a beautiful new space… it meant a lot. Earlier in the day, I was hanging paintings with @amandamclenon and @elizabetharthouse in our brand new studio. I haven’t said much about it yet- it’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks of moving in and finding our footing, but I’ll share more soon. For now, here are a few glimpses of paintings going up, my (still box-filled) soon-to-be painting corner, the couch we bought at the ReStore, and a plaque honoring Helaine, my landlord from Riverview Station. I cried reading it. (And I can’t share all of this without acknowledging the tension I’m holding at the same time as all this. In one hand, there is movement forward… new spaces, rebuilding, sunshine, hope. In the other, there is grief, fear, and anger at the state of the world, the violence, the injustices, and the leadership shaping so much of it. I don’t have a clean way to reconcile those things. I just know I keep showing up, keep making art, and try not to look away.) #ashevilleart #kelceyloomer @riverartsdistrictasheville by @kelceyloomer
Something I made today just for the fun of it. ♠️♥️ #kelceyloomer #aliceinwonderland by @kelceyloomer
Some sketches from a bouquet picked from my garden, along with a few roadside sprigs of pokeberry and goldenrod. These little observations make my days feel more thoughtful and grounded. I’m always hoping that feeling carries through into my finished work, and that some of that same sense of connection reaches the people who spend time with my paintings. #sketching #ashevilleart #kelceyloomer #cottonmillavl #riverartsdistrictasheville by @kelceyloomer
I downloaded an app to mock up paintings in different settings and homes for practical reasons- but I have been having so much fun picking out different spaces they would look good in. I love the one with the colorful pillows with my painting “Goodnight Hawk Migration” . Come see it irl at the #avlcottonmill in the #riverartsdistrictasheville ☺️ #ashevilleart #kelceyloomer #narrativepainting by @kelceyloomer
Candid scenes from today in the studio. There is fresh basil on our worktable that Amanda got at the farmer’s market. It is making the whole space smell so amazing. 🤩 #cottonmillstudios #kelceyloomer #ochrerose #riverartsdistrictasheville by @kelceyloomer
Even though this painting is a few years old, not a lot of people have seen it in person. It was one of the paintings that was slated to be part of my solo show at @tygertygergallery but after the flood had been stored away until this year. It has been nice to have it on the wall again. ✨ #ashevillenc #kelceyloomer @riverartsdistrictasheville by @kelceyloomer
I worried a lot. Will the garden grow, will the rivers flow in the right direction, will the earth turn as it was taught, and if not, how shall I correct it? Was I right, was I wrong, will I be forgiven, can I do better? Will I ever be able to sing, even the sparrows can do it and I am, well, hopeless. Is my eyesight fading or am I just imagining it, am I going to get rheumatism, lockjaw, dementia? Finally I saw that worrying had come to nothing. And gave it up. And took my old body and went out into the morning, and sang. -Mary Oliver #ashevilleart #kelceyloomer #sketchbookpainting by @kelceyloomer
Some Inspirations lately ✨✨✨ by @kelceyloomer
I had the chance to meet the artist Mary Paulson in Holden Beach, North Carolina. For the past 40 years, she has been building a roadside folk art installation that feels part gallery, part living world of her own making. When we talked, she shared her process of how she reverse paints on glass windows, all while eating a big bowl of boiled peanuts. At 79, she is still actively building and expanding, which I found deeply inspiring. What stayed with me most was her sense of freedom. She creates whatever she imagines, without concern for what others might consider sensible. The adult in me felt moments of overwhelm at the sheer volume and the visible decay of parts of it. But my childhood self was completely captivated by the treehouses, the painted ceilings and floors, the small buildings that felt like forts, the strangeness, and the sense that anything was possible. #marysgonewild #holdenbeach by @kelceyloomer
I spent 2024 studying with the @royaldrawingschool through their online Drawing Development Year program. Before I applied, I saw a photo of a past student who had laid all of their work across the floor, filling an entire room. I remember thinking that if I got in, I would love do the same at the end. As someone who tended to paint slowly, the idea of building that kind of volume, of seeing a year’s worth of work all at once, felt incredibly compelling. However, at the very end of the program, my studio was flooded. Some of the work was lost, and the rest was packed into boxes and put into storage. Earlier this year, when I moved back into the River Arts District, I finally had the chance to lay everything out. It filled the space just like I had imagined. Standing in the middle of it all was a powerful experience, and one I am still taking in. (Swipe to see some videos closer up) The program itself was immersive and so incredible for my journey as an artist. I applied thinking it would help me refine my focus and narrow things down. Instead, it expanded my already wide range of interests. And looking back, I can see that was exactly what I needed. I will be considering and filtering all that I learned for the rest of my life I feel sure. #oddy #royaldrawingschool #royaldrawingschooloddy24 #ashevilleriverartsdistrict by @kelceyloomer
