Reclaiming My Story | Day 8 of 34: I Became Her Anyway
‘Surviving without the language’

I share my personal story of growing up in an abusive household, where my mother’s verbal and physical abuse was a constant presence. Despite this, I found refuge in school and achievement, becoming class president and graduating college as the first in my family. I talk about how I learned to separate my circumstances from my identity, and how over-functioning became a coping mechanism. My message is that your past can explain you without defining you, and it’s never too late to create new traditions.

Reclaiming My Story | Day 22 of 34: Find Your Way Back (SEA -> HOU) ✨

After leaving preaching, I spent the next few years reinventing myself in real time—earning my master’s, moving to Seattle, building new relationships, creating a life that felt like mine, and discovering who I was without the role I once built my identity around.

Turns out, becoming yourself can look a lot like simply living.

Reclaiming My Story | Day 6 of 34: Bi + Out: From Church to Queer Liberation

In this video, I talk about my journey with bisexuality, from dating women at 19 to navigating a homophobic Christian upbringing and later becoming celibate and preaching in a megachurch. I share how I eventually reclaimed my queer identity through studying theology and social justice, came out to my family, and now live authentically as a proud Black bisexual woman.

This next run will look effortless, I promise. I earned it. ✨🫶🏽

Twelve years after becoming a four-year Texas Pom veteran (@utexasspirit ) and junior-year co-captain, I got to sign the wall at the opening of The Fringe, our new exhibit in Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. It felt surreal to leave my stamp on @utexasspirit history and on a legacy that meant so much to me.

I was one of the only Black women on Texas Pom for two of my four years, graduating from a university that was 4% Black with more than 50,000 students. It’s wild to be living in the prayers you once prayed.

People may see the photos, the performances, the beautiful uniforms, and the best seat in the house. They may never know the sleepless nights, the loans (no scholarships, just free nike gear), the practices in shabby spaces and a broom closet under the stadium, or the work it took to balance a full course load, a self-taught hair business, choreography, music edits, 40+ appearances, and tryouts for every football season, with no guaranteed spot.

I loved performing, and I fought to keep that love alive. But being one of the only also meant speaking up, navigating microaggressions, and learning early how to advocate for what was right, … even when it came with a cost.

Texas Pom stretched me in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time. It taught me time management, resilience, discernment, and how to keep carving my own path without making myself everybody’s cup of tea. I want the kind of success that lasts and lets me remain true to who I am.

I’m proud I saw it through. And I’m grateful for the ways it shaped the woman I became.

Horns in five 🤘🏽

Texas Texas, Yee-haw! Four years on Texas Pom (@utexasspirit ) nearly 12 years ago, and my first Texas Cheer & Pom alumni weekend (@utexasspiritalumni ) had me feeling ALL the nostalgia. The golf carts, the facilities glow-up, the memories-and the reminder that I built a beautiful life that looks different than I imagined it back then. I love it here ✨

@texasfootball @steve.sarkisian — smoke signal: help us out with that alumni ticket situation next year? plz

I spent a lot of years becoming who I thought I was supposed to be. Now, I’m having fun finding out who I actually am. ✨

New to Houston, New experiences, new rooms, new versions of me. And this time, I’m not waiting until I feel ready to live.

Apparently, my new personality trait is saying yes to things I’ve never done before. 🤎

Apparently I had internalized a dress code nobody actually gave me.

So I wore the top.

And got compliments all day.

Sometimes the most interesting rules to question are the ones we never consciously chose. 🤷🏽‍♀️

One of the best parts of becoming yourself is realizing you don’t have to wait for your life to look a certain way before you start enjoying it. 🥂

More experiences. More new faces. More saying yes just because something sounds fun.

And apparently… supper clubs are one of them. ✨

Adult children with good parents & Parents with Adult-children who STILL show up for them - DROP YOUR EXAMPLES BELOW. 👂🏽👂🏽👇🏾✨

Parents: How do you still show up for your adult children? What do those boundaries, conversations, and moments of support look like?

Adult children: What do your parents do that would send a nonchalant parent into a TAILSPIN? The little things you thought were normal until you realized not everybody experienced them.

I genuinely want to learn what healthy, loving parenting looks like so I can be a good parent to my own kids one day—and show up better for the people in my life now.

Let’s teach each other what healthy love looks like. 🤎

FYI: I have no children or children on the way, I'm just an adult-child navigating a complex family system, who is always taking notes on parenting possibilities given my background, should I have some little humans someday.

A reminder to stop treating your dreams like they’re more possible for other people than they are for you.

Bet on yourself. Do the work. Stay consistent. Trust the timing.

Not forced time. Due time. 🤎

Now go act like you believe in the life you say you want.
