📚 Libraries are on the ballot this election! 🗳️

When we think about elections, we usually focus on the candidates, but don’t overlook those amendments and local ballot measures!

For example, in Florida, some proposed changes could have a significant impact on funding for public libraries, educational programs, and other community resources. And Florida isn’t the only state where these issues are coming up!

Libraries are so much more than buildings filled with books. They provide access to education, technology, literacy programs, and resources that so many people depend on.

So please, get out and VOTE! 🗳️ And take a few extra minutes to read the fine print on those amendments and ballot measures. You might be surprised by what’s at stake!

Did your ballot include any measures that could affect your local libraries? Let me know in the comments!

Writers, when submitting to literary agents, make sure you’re following their specific submission guidelines!

Some agents want a synopsis, while others don’t. One agent might request the first 50 pages of your manuscript, while another might ask for the first three chapters. Some may even have specific formatting requirements. It’s really important to pay attention to these details because some agents are particular about their submission guidelines and may not even review your materials if you haven’t followed their instructions.

It’s always better to be safe than sorry! Take the extra few minutes to visit each agency’s website and double-check what they’re requesting before hitting submit. Unfortunately, submission guidelines aren’t universal, and what works for one agent may not work for another. You’ve worked hard on your manuscript. Don’t let something as simple as submitting the wrong materials get in the way of having your work considered!

Can a bad query letter keep a literary agent from reading your manuscript? Not always, but it definitely can. Most literary agents understand just how difficult it is to summarize an entire manuscript in a few short paragraphs, especially if you’ve never done it before. We don’t expect writers to be professional salespeople or marketing experts. Writing a compelling pitch is a completely different skill from writing a book, and we know that.

Because of this, most agents give writers quite a bit of leeway. Your query doesn’t have to be perfect. It doesn’t even have to be close to perfect! If the premise is intriguing, many agents will overlook a less-than-stellar pitch and take a look at the sample pages. But there’s a difference between a query that needs some polishing and one that’s an absolute mess.

If a query is poorly written, disorganized, riddled with grammatical errors, or difficult to follow, it can raise some serious red flags. An agent may start wondering whether those same problems exist throughout the manuscript. And if they do, how much editorial work is going to be involved in getting that manuscript ready for submission?

Most agents are juggling existing clients, reviewing submissions, negotiating contracts, communicating with publishers, and managing countless other responsibilities. Many simply don’t have the time to take on a manuscript that requires extensive developmental editing or multiple rounds of revisions. And if your query suggests that’s what they’re getting into, they may decide not to read any further.

So put your best foot forward! Your query letter is more than a summary of your story. It’s your introduction to an agent, your opportunity to spark their interest, and a chance to showcase your writing abilities.

What’s the hardest part of writing a query letter for you?

Horror books are having quite a moment, and I’m getting in on the trend!

I want to know what everyone is reading! What are the scariest, creepiest, bloodiest, most mysterious, or downright terrifying supernatural books out there? I want recommendations straight from the source—the readers themselves. Let’s get a conversation going.

For me, one of my all-time favorites is The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. When I was reading it, I had a strict rule that I would ONLY read it during daylight hours. But one evening, I was so completely immersed that I couldn’t bring myself to stop when the sun went down. So what did I do? Turned on EVERY light in the house and put on some upbeat instrumental music to make the experience a little less terrifying… to no avail.

What’s the one book that genuinely scared you? The one that had you checking over your shoulder or sleeping with the lights on or putting it in the freezer like Joey Tribiani?

Let me know in the comments! I’m dying to hear your recommendations! 🎃👻

Writing can be stressful! Between the creative chaos, self-doubt, endless revisions, and trying to get the words just right, sometimes we need a break from our own stories.

There’s no better way to unwind than getting lost in someone else’s world of words. I think there’s something wonderful about balancing the stress of writing with the simple joy of reading. It’s all about finding that ebb and flow.

When life gets a little crazy, what’s your favorite comfort book to reread? Let me know in the comments!

Your manuscript might be amazing, but will your query letter convince a literary agent to read it? Does your query accurately explain your story in a way that is exciting?

Your query letter is often your first (and sometimes only) opportunity to grab an agent’s attention. And with agents receiving hundreds, sometimes thousands, of queries every month, making a strong first impression is incredibly important!

As an experienced literary agent and developmental editor, I know what agents are looking for and what can make a query stand out in a crowded inbox.

For $50, I’ll provide a personalized critique of your query letter, with constructive feedback and suggestions to help you put your best foot forward.

Your story deserves a chance to be read. Let’s make sure your query gives it one!

Have you started querying agents yet, or are you still working on getting your letter just right? Let me know in the comments!

Writers, we really need to give ourselves a little grace and learn to enjoy the journey. I know that’s easier said than done, especially when you’ve spent hours writing something only to scrap it and start over. Or when your editor or beta reader suggests major revisions that force you to kill your darlings. 😩😳😲🥴

But the rewrites, the frustration, the second-guessing, and the occasional urge to throw your laptop out the window are all part of the process! Try to enjoy the scenic route, even when it takes you somewhere unexpected. Because one day, when you finally hold your published book in your hands and think, I actually did this, all those bumps in the road will have been worth it!

What’s the craziest detour you’ve taken on your writing journey? Let me know in the comments!
