A thing on the go,, that may or may not get somewhere. Fortunately this is the most enjoyable part of the process, working out what can work, and how it could be made. 100% practical art and exactly what I dreamed I would be doin@g in architecture school. The 5% are the ones that go anywhere. You have to work out whether it’s worth going with them. by @kevinfellinghamarchitects

Rebar getting a wriggle on, the building is at various oblique angles to itself, so the steel grid has some radial bits to take the load back to strong points in the vertical structure. The slab acts as a sideways beam to deal with seismic loads. Diaphragm action. Architecture is building plus other stuff, but fundamentally it’s building. Not social engineering, personal expression, cultural expression, philosophy, ecology, whatnot. All of those things fail if the building is not a good piece of construction. Base and superstructure can’t be thought about in isolation. Ask @kennethframptonarchitect. He wrote the book. by @kevinfellinghamarchitects

Llandudno out of phase site meeting to resolve old bulging wall issue before it becomes new sliding window issue Adaptive reuse takes flexibility in timing and design. You get who you pay for in making buildings, architects, engineers and contractors are not fungible, they are humans with minds and values. Some are cogs ,and some are suckers, and some combine the two. Some are professionals in the old fashioned sense of standing by the quality of their work. by @kevinfellinghamarchitects

Corbu says”Architects and other people need to understand that if they work together they can cut out the middle-man and get value for money and more than 5% art.” by @kevinfellinghamarchitects

@wetlandpoolsafrica just delivered me six new friends. In the next few days they will be putting their heads above water. by @kevinfellinghamarchitects

Yes I am a cynical bastard , a misanthrope, but I like a good sundown view as much as the next meerkat. The pictures are a bit soft focus, but the view went 200 km into the past. Thats 0.000667 seconds (or approximately 0.67 milliseconds). Then the smog of civilization congealed and the world turned just enough to take away the highlights. by @kevinfellinghamarchitects

On site in Llandudno. Not the Welsh one , but with Welsh weather. All decked out, with the edge beam cages done. This is the most complex chunk of concrete ever to has come through the office- an irregular existing plan, remedial seismic structure, recesses for showers, terraces, decks and what have you squeezed from above and below by height restrictions driven by LUMS and Building Control and fitting around some big boulders which are now part of the architecture. We will all be delighted when it’s done. One of our first houses, from 30 years ago established the model of upside down houses@on sloping sites with roof terraces and monopitch roofs. Back then we were interested in making things complex. This house is unavoidably so, but it will feel effortless in the end. It’s a magic trick, learned through years of practice. by @kevinfellinghamarchitects

Lots of rebar, turning into cages and lots of formwork giving form to the work. The most complex part of this project is a slab which sits at the bottom of an exposed ring-beam to allow for a weather step for the penthouse terrace, then switches to the top to achieve minimum ceiling height in the bedrooms where the floor level below steps up. It also has to project to take the sliding doors and shutters on the outer face of the wall. Why? In order to achieve a departure free scheme and retain the existing building. These two conditions made the project achievable. As Cape Town densities, these sort of problems become more common, whilst the development ailed and integrated design skills to solve them become less common. Architects are not all equally capable of all things, especially the inexperienced and cheap ones. by @kevinfellinghamarchitects

In excess of what is strictly necessary and a long time coming. The builder decided to put the gargoyle over the door in prefer to cause as much annoyance to the architect as damage to the walls. I finally found a solution which brings delight, a work for people who make things with their brains, tools and hands. That counts most people out….. by @kevinfellinghamarchitects
