The secret to this 9km Dorset coastal walk?
Start at 2:00 PM. 🌅
Parking at Kimmeridge Bay you head inland first, you’ll wander through the village, passing the Clavell Restaurant (great Cream tea!!) @clavellsrestaurant and the Etches Collection (a fossil collector’s dream!) @tec_kimmeridge . In front of you, you will see the pretty church 💒-enter the churchyard gate and pass through heading up the hill to start your steady climb up onto the high ridge. Follow the ridgeline all the way across to Swyre Head—the highest point on the Isle of Purbeck at 203m—with panoramic views stretching across the countryside, Corfe Castle and out to sea.
Drop down off the high ground to join the South West Coast Path right around 3:40 PM. That gives you an entire hour of low, amber light along the cliff tops and wave-cut shale ledges before reaching Clavell Tower just as the sun sets over the bay.

Did you know Clavell Tower was rescued and rebuilt stone-by-stone by @thelandmarktrust? They restore at-risk historic buildings across the UK and fund their preservation through holiday lets—meaning you can actually book to stay right here! ✨

⏱️ The Golden Hour Schedule (~4:40 PM sunset):
2:00 PM: Set off from Kimmeridge Bay car park & head inland
2:15 PM: Cut through the village churchyard & climb towards the ridge
2:45 – 3:15 PM: Ridge walk across to Swyre Head summit (203m)
3:40 PM: Drop down to the South West Coast Path as golden hour begins
4:30 – 4:40 PM: Catch the sunset glow at Clavell Tower before heading down to the car
📍 Route Details:
Start/Finish: Kimmeridge Bay Car Park
Distance: ~9km circular trail
Parking: £6 winter toll rate (£12 summer season)
Terrain: Village tracks, steady grassy climbs, and undulating cliff paths

Save this for your next weekend walk in Dorset 📌

✨ Golden hour on the Jurassic Coast just hits differently…

Kimmeridge Bay, tucked along England’s breathtaking Jurassic Coast, is one of those places that feels completely magical. 🌊✨ Dramatic cliffs, ancient rocks, endless sea views — and when the sun begins to set, everything turns golden.

There’s something so special about slowing down, breathing in the sea air and watching the last light dance across the water. Spending golden hour here is complete magic. 🌅🤍

A little reminder that some of the most beautiful places are right here on our doorstep.

So interesting to have a guided visit by Sir Steve Etches of the @tec_kimmeridge Etches collection on Sunday morning. An amazing collection of fossils found in Kimmeridge clay and millions of years old, beautifully displayed and explained in layman terms, this museum is a not to miss for all ages. Thank you for making us so welcome before the our walk into Swanage. It is the most visited museum by schools in Dorset! @kimmeridgebay_official @kimmeridgecrt @kimmeridge_gang @loveswanage @loveswanage @purbeck_sounds @helenswanagenews @purbeckfolk @purbeck.events @jurassic.coast.media @jurassiccoastofficial @loveitlocalmagazine @dorsetlifemagazine @prehistoric.dinosaur.hub @fossilcollective by @kimmeridgebay_official

🌊🐠 Exploring Dorset’s Underwater World 🐠🌊

What if I told you one of the UK’s best snorkel trails is hiding on the Jurassic Coast?

A first visit to Kimmeridge Bay’s famous Snorkel Trail recently and so pleased finally managed to get down there!

The crystal-clear water made for one of the best SUP and snorkelling sessions I've had on the south coast. Following the marked underwater route revealed a hidden world of swaying seaweed forests, fish darting between the rocks and incredible marine habitats that many visitors never get to see and nice that it's actively encouraged.

At low tide, the bay transforms completely, with a vast rock ledge stretching out to sea, fossils waiting to be spotted and some of the most unique coastal scenery

🐠 A huge shout-out to Dorset Wildlife Trust, who manage the fantastic Fine Foundation Wild Seas Centre overlooking the bay. Pop in before or after your swim to learn more about the marine life living beneath the surface, pick up a waterproof snorkel trail guide and support the incredible conservation work happening here.

📍 Kimmeridge Bay Car Park, BH20 5PF
💷 £6 per vehicle for the day
🤿 Snorkel set hire available from the Wild Seas Centre (£5 plus refundable deposit)
📏 Snorkel trail approximately 400m long with marker buoys to follow
🚻 Toilets available
☕ Refreshments, ice creams and picnic areas nearby
🥾 Don’t miss the short walk up to Clavell Tower for stunning views across the Jurassic Coast

As more people discover places like Kimmeridge, it’s important we all do our bit:

🌿 Leave no trace
🐟 Respect marine life and habitats
🚮 Take litter home
❤️ Help protect these special places for future generations

And if you’re heading into the water:

🌊 Check tides and conditions
👥 Never snorkel alone
🦺 Consider a tow float or buoyancy aid
❄️ Be aware of cold-water shock, even in summer

For coastal safety advice, the RNLI has some excellent guidance:

This is exactly the kind of place that reminds us how lucky we are to have incredible wildlife and wild spaces right here on our doorstep.

It's fair to say that the weather in the West Country has kept us guessing this March ☁️🌤🌦

Our recent hike to Kimmeridge Bay was a bit dreary initially... we could hear the sea, but couldnt see it.😶‍🌫️
We knew all the benches we were passing were facing incredible views but couldn't see a thing!

But, a few more twists and turns along the coastline and there, emerging in the mist, was a very cool four-storey tower. Turns out it was saved from teetering off the cliff edge by the @landmarktrust who moved it, brick by brick, away from its perilous position, gave it a spruce up and now offer it as a holiday let for tourists to Dorset.

The village of Kimmeridge is a corker. It has a museum @tec_kimmeridge and a cafe/restaurant @clavellsrestaurant which serves delicious ice cream @purbeckicecream - everyday is an ice cream day 😊
