Steven and I had the amazing opportunity to travel to South Africa to celebrate becoming “empty nesters”. I knew the day was coming and I refused to be sad about it. And for those who have lived through this transition, you know it’s equal parts happiness of a new chapter in life while also grieving the part that is now over. We were able to experience Cape Town, Johannesburg and go on safari. We also visited Mauritius. It was the trip of a lifetime and I am so grateful. Mostly grateful for this amazing life. I’m going to be sure I live it fully. by @stevensock

Last Senior Sunday. The littlest sock graduates this week. I truly cannot believe how fast these years have gone by. We are so excited for all that Sully has accomplished in his high school years. 3 X state champion with the North Gwinnett Ice Dawgs, Maxwell School of Technology Student of the Year & 3rd at State Skills USA. We are even more excited for what is in his future. Upon graduation (3 days later in fact), Sully will head back to Montana to continue his work with @refuge_foundation . We will miss him like crazy and also know that this is exactly where he’s supposed to be.

Sully, we are so proud of you. Continue to be you and share your joy with the world. Keep bringing your unique self to each and every challenge you face. And never lose your sense of wonder and love for life. Go be you and go be great!

Yesterday I was given the honor to go back to my alma mater and give the spring commencement speech. This year marks 30 years since I stepped foot in Statesboro and never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined I would celebrate it that way.
•
Georgia Southern University changed my life. I moved there at the age of 18 from a small town in Texas and knew no one. When I showed up on campus I was a political science major with aspirations of going to law school. That changed when a professor saw something in me and convinced me to change my major to accounting. Dr. Mooney became a lifelong mentor who I was able to thank for his investment in my life.
•
I encouraged the graduates to pay attention to those around them who can teach them things books cannot, learn from leaders whose lives are filled with joy and purpose in addition to success and achievement, to say yes to opportunities even when they might not feel ready and most importantly to show up as themselves ready to bring their unique gifts to the challenges this world faces. I hope they were able to gain a little inspiration on a day filled with celebration.

I am forever grateful for all GSU has given me and yesterday was another beautiful gift. Thank you Dr. Marrero, Trip, Dr. Avi and the rest of the faculty and staff for the honor of a lifetime. Hail Southern! taken in Georgia Southern University by @stevensock
