Brisbane/Meanjin architects designing places with character. We work with homes (mostly) and commercial spaces (sometimes). Led by Leah Gallagher.

POSTS STORIES REELS

One of the big things our clients wanted from their renovation was for their home to feel connected to their garden.

However, this is a flood-prone site, and we had to be strategic about how we made this happen!

Their extension couldn't sit on the ground, so instead we tried to establish touch points with the landscape all around the home (as you can see in this external tour).

They can feel close to their garden as they come through the front gate, as they cook in the kitchen, as they sit out on the deck – all while still sitting safely off the ground.

Hello from the team! It's so nice to have some photos of the KIN crew in our colourful studio.

Those of you who have visited our West End home know that there are many windowsill chats, cups of tea and puppy naps happening over here, and @alannajaynemctiernan has captured it all beautifully.

Looking forward to another big and exciting year 💚

One of our favourite tile moments to date! We wanted the Tree House ensuite to feel like you were among the foliage, and these recycled glass mosaic tiles really delivered.

Mix in a warm timber vanity, extra green tones in the sink & countertop, and windows looking out to the actual foliage, and Bob's your uncle 🟩

A reminder that you can absolutely create a curvy, retro-inspired, mint-coloured kitchen with geometric pink floor tiles.

It can also be supremely functional and hardwearing, with copious amounts of storage, stretches of stainless steel-clad countertops, and neatly integrated appliances (should you happen to be a very passionate cook).

And, it can accommodate a bar area where you might sit with a glass of wine, and eat some cheese from the world's coolest built-in cheese platter made by @five_mile_radius. These things are all possible!

The point here is that there aren't really that many 'rules'. Don't be afraid to do something different and let your home have a little flair. If you love the spaces you live in, and they really feel like you and they work for your daily life... you've won!

Big shout out to our client for this Beaumont Apartment Renovation, who was all in on her extremely cool kitchen ⭐️

Yes, cars are a very necessary consideration in a home (you do have to put them somewhere) but we would like to see garages and carports be a little less dominant in our streets!

Our first preference would be car storage that’s tucked neatly away and doesn’t take up the street frontage. And if that’s not possible, we will happily settle for garages, carports and driveways that have something fun and interesting about them, so they can contribute to a richer neighbourhood fabric.

Swipe for our thoughts on how to do this! Anything to add? 🚗

The idea with the Tree House kitchen was to introduce as much timber as we could, without it feeling like a sauna!

This was our way of weaving in another connection to the back yard poinciana that is so impactful in these living areas. You look directly out to branches and foliage – and then when you bring your gaze back inside, it feels like the space you're in is almost an extension of the tree.

The spotted gum lining the walls and cabinetry is a beautiful mid-tone timber (not too blonde and sauna-esque!) which provides a lot of warmth, tactility, and groundedness.

Complementary dashes of freshness are provided by the pale green tones of the stone and tiles, plus the natural light that streams through the openings dotted around the space 🌳

We recently took some current clients for a tour of the garden at Coorparoo Reno, as an example of how much a landscape grows and changes as time goes on.

It’s really the gift that keeps on giving – the relationship between home and garden just gets stronger and stronger! The clever and talented Owen from @arbouressence created this wonderful garden, and our clients have done a beautiful job of caring for it.

It’s so nice to see it flourishing, rich with leafy subtropical plants and dotted with springtime flowers. Thanks to our clients as always for letting us come through 💚

We had a Spanish Mission home in our Coorparoo tour, and we couldn’t resist having one for Holland Park too! It is a very striking style, and this one in particular has quite the list of lovely features.

The street appeal is strong. The gabled forms, and the crisp white render that’s decorated by the warm moments of terracotta tile and brick: from the thin edge of the roof to the window hoods, from the archway entry to the quoining on the corners.

There’s texture, there’s interest, there’s earthiness, there’s acknowledgement of the subtropical climate it sits within. Lots to appreciate.

We had the chance to chat with the owner too, who is another proud custodian – which is no surprise, since this home has clearly been very well taken care of. We love to see it!

A collection of the lightly updated rooms in the original Queenslander at Coorparoo Reno.

There's something very nice about having a stained glass window in your new walk-in shower, or a VJ-lined light-well that brings sunshine into a landlocked bedroom.

It's the best of both worlds approach: all the charm and character preserved, but paired carefully with updated elements and improved functionality where needed.

P.S. In pics 2 and 4, you can see how we've retained and infilled archways and doorways from the original home. Some of these rooms needed to be shuffled or repurposed, so rather than remove evidence of the passages, we decided to keep them so that the walls can tell more the story of the original home. A little extra nod to the old girl 🤍

It's harder to feel like you're part of a community if you rarely get the chance to interact with the people who live near you. And this is not your fault!

Many homes just aren't designed to connect their inhabitants to the street. The good thing is that you don't need to overhaul your entire house and garden to forge that connection: there are plenty of simple, affordable, renter-friendly moves that will go a long way.

It's worth mentioning that doing something a bit different, or a bit extroverted, or a bit vulnerable with your home can feel scary. But we think that every ounce of bravery we can collectively muster up will pay handsome dividends in the feeling of our streets and neighbourhoods.

Whether you go big or start small, take this as a sign to be a bit brave (and to have some fun) 🍭

Sharing another piece of the puzzle for our West End Reno! The gentle renovation and grounded extension to this Queenslander is underway on site, and these are the materials we will be dressing it in.

Our clients were keen to create a very earthy and rich palette and we had a lot of fun pulling it together for them. It has warm timbers, varied shades of red and green, little references to the original home, mirrored surfaces to bounce natural light around, and a very strong tile game.

Always a treat to have clients who are happy to go for it 🫜 more to come soon!

A very sweet, simple and solid home, which leans more mid-century than a lot of the post-war houses in this area.

What you see is what you get, and what you get is quite lovely! Brickwork and timber contrasted with white and blue accents; nice minimal steel detailing; a spacious covered deck where you can sit and enjoy the breeze, which can flow easily inside.

A good home doesn’t need to be an extravagant one. This is Exhibit A 💙

P.S. the old photo of this house is from the @statelibraryqld Corley Explorer archives – if you haven’t come across them before, we highly recommend taking a look! It’s an incredible photographic collection of houses in Brisbane and SEQ, captured during the 1960s and 1970s.

The photos were taken by Frank and Eunice Corley who drove through the streets in a pink Cadillac, photographing houses and offering them to the homeowners to purchase. They had a caravan as a darkroom, so they could sell photos as they traveled around.

An extremely cool thing to do and something that has left us with this endlessly useful and fascinating record of the homes in Brisbane and beyond. We are grateful to them!
