In 2021, an elderly French couple was clearing out their home in preparation for a yard sale when they came across an African mask. Initially, they believed it was “worthless,” and sold it to a local antique dealer for $158. A few months later, they read in a newspaper article that the dealer had resold it in auction — for $4.4 million. Now, the couple has sued the dealer for roughly $5.55 million in compensation, claiming he failed to disclose his suspicions about the piece’s actual worth.

The Mask from the Ngil society Fang People of Gabon to be auctioned on March 26th. Circa late 19th century, fashioned in soft wood, kaolin, vegetable fibers

It was assessed and authenticated by the renowned Parisian gallery dealer Bernard Dulon known for his expertise in the domain of African art. The particularly elegant mask was presented by Bertrand de Latour and Jean-Christophe Giuseppe auctioneers of the Montpellier auction house at a recent exhibition at the Galerie Pierre-Alain Challier in Paris. The Ngil masks of Gabon showcase the features typical of Fang carvings: a very broad forehead, a heart-shaped face and a double arch over the eyes. The kaolin used in the fashioning of the mask conveys the color of the dead or spirits. by @youngparis

What the ‘West’ filed under “primitive,” Noguchi understood as good design

The chair Isamu Noguchi is folded into was carved by a Lobi maker in what is now Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire. It’s a showcase of how the human body itself can be at one with design rather than a mere user. Here, the seat touches the ground at a single point while the sitter’s feet form the other two to complete the structure.

Noguchi kept the piece in his Long Island City studio alongside a room of benches and stools crafted in West Africa. Though he never travelled to the continent, he’d acquired the pieces through friends, and understood them clearer than most of the institutions around him.

At a time when the New York art world was still gathering African and indigenous objects into a Museum of Primitive Art, admiring them for a perceived abstraction while simultaneously disregarding them as lesser-than, Noguchi used a 1957 essay to pick apart that framing. Where his contemporaries saw the primitive, he saw innovative engineering solutions, calling the makers intelligent for the way the design turned the body into part of its own balance rather than working against it.

That attention fed into his own work. His 1954 Rocking Stool grew directly out of a carved Congolese stool he had been living with, and the idea it handed him: that a seat needs only one point and the person sitting holds the rest, carried into his renowned furniture. And it wasn’t long before the same art world was celebrating those creations as forward-thinking design. by @youngparis
