Apparently I can be happy for another business owner and want to scream into my coffee at the same time.

This morning we got the email that The Knot Worldwide, the company behind The Knot and WeddingWire, has agreed to acquire Zola.

And I have some feelings.

The business owner in me thinks, congratulations to Zola. Building something that another company wants to buy is a huge accomplishment. I can absolutely appreciate that.

The person paying to advertise on these websites? I feel a little defeated.

Over the last year, Zola has been the one wedding platform consistently bringing us inquiries that feel like a good fit. Couples who seem interested in our work and the experience we provide, beyond just comparing the lowest price.

Our experience with The Knot and WeddingWire has been frustrating. When you’re looking at advertising costs around $500–$600 a month per website, you need those inquiries to actually go somewhere. For us, the return hasn’t justified the expense.

So hearing that the platform that’s been working for us is joining that same company makes me nervous. I don’t know what will change, but I really liked having that alternative.

And this is part of the conversation I wish more people heard when they say, “You add the word wedding and suddenly the price doubles.”

I understand that weddings are expensive. I understand wanting to keep your budget reasonable. But the businesses you’re hiring have expenses you never see, including what it costs just to get our work in front of you. Hundreds of dollars a month to be listed on a website still have to come from somewhere.

Advertising is one piece of that, but it’s a real piece.

Anyway, that’s my wedding industry vent for today. Happy for the people who built Zola. Frustrated as a small business owner who finally felt like one of these platforms was working for us.

Other wedding pros, how are you feeling about this? by @kjohnartistry

Well, I never thought my day would consist of working a wedding then body painting for CATS the musical that I had to be approved for by the Secret Service. And no, I can’t show any pictures so I’ll just do this really cute photo of Taylor Swift. by @kjohnartistry

Last week, I caught up with Kate from The Bridal Beauty Team, and she told me more grooms are asking for makeup on their wedding day. Naturally, I needed to know more—because I’m so on board! 🍸

We’re talking about evening out skin tone, covering a blemish, or brightening up dark circles so the groom feels confident in photos, too. Yes, sir! 👏

Kate and I sat down for a full Martini Mondays chat, coming next Monday. Stay tuned for teasers all week!
