🌊 Emerging from the mud of the Thames… Coming to the Great North Bedchamber as part of Paper Castle, Klara Fokicheva’s That Which Cannot be Destroyed (2026) is created from fragments salvaged from the riverbank — branches, clay and found materials shaped by the hidden histories of London itself ✨ Inspired by the long tradition of mudlarking along the Thames, the work explores how objects can carry memory, preserving traces of lives, stories and forgotten worlds beneath the surface. The piece enters into dialogue with Horace Walpole’s own fascination with curious objects and fragments of the past at Strawberry Hill. 🏰 Swipe to see an 18th-century view of Strawberry Hill from the river, published in 1754, when the Thames formed an essential part of the villa’s landscape and imagination. ✨ PAPER CASTLE  🗓 Saturday 6 – Sunday 21 June 2026 🔗 strawberryhillhouse.org.uk/paper-castle 🎓Developed by MA Curating students @Courtauld 📜Charlton Wollaston, East Front of Strawberry Hill, from the River (1754). Introducing Klara Fokicheva (@klara_fo ), an artist based in London. Klara Fokicheva collects objects and materials surrendered by the city and landscape after dark. Fragments of bone, ceramic and driftwood salvaged from the Thames foreshore, remnants shaped by tide, soil, and time. Rooted in animist and earth-centred belief, the practice understands objects and matter as carriers of spirit and memory, alive with what has passed through them. Shaped by Eastern European folklore, where the forest has its own logic. What is encountered there at night is not resolved by morning. Fokicheva’s practice is built on the same understanding. Collected materials externalise an interior terrain most hesitate to enter. The assembled paintings treat the wall as a portal, constructed through inherited knowledge of how objects placed with intention open rather than close. What rises in the viewer was already there.
