What was goin’ on in 2005? The 2005 spin-off game Shadow the Hedgehog received generally unfavorable reviews from critics and mixed reactions from players. Fans were deeply split. Many disliked the tonal shift away from family-friendly platforming. Over time, a portion of the fanbase embraced the game for its high-energy soundtrack, replay value via hundreds of possible path combinations with 10 endings, and unapologetically over-the-top 2000s edginess. The Boondocks premiered on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim to 1.6 million viewers, marking the highest-rated series premiere in the block’s history at the time. It became a landmark satirical comedy praised for its anime-influenced animation, sharp social commentary on race and politics, and all-star voice casting. Released worldwide in 2005, Sony’s PSP ranks as the best-selling handheld video game console of all time not made by Nintendo. Zoey 101 served as a game-changer for Nickelodeon by shifting teen dramedy storytelling away from traditional multi-camera sitcoms with laugh tracks toward a more cinematic, single-camera format. The show shaped millennial and Gen-Z expectations around boarding school life, close-knit friend groups, and slow-burn romance tropes. Avatar: The Last Airbender was the highest-rated animated show in its demographic, averaging 1.1 million viewers per episode. It is universally acclaimed as one of the greatest animated television shows of all time, praised for its deep storytelling, complex character arcs, and rich world-building. Anticipation was high for Kingdom Hearts II prior to release. Readers of PlayStation Magazine voted it the second “most wanted game” in September 2004. After its release in 2005, the game was met with generally positive reviews praising the new combat system that added depth, variety, and excitement. Kanye West’s “Gold Digger” featuring Jamie Foxx is one of the most successful commercial singles of his career and the 2000s. It peaked at number 1 and spent 10 consecutive weeks at the top. How did the least powerful gaming console of its era manage to outsell its competitors? Despite being less powerful than the Xbox and GameCube, the PlayStation 2 secured a significant lead in sales. The PS2 was marketed as an all-in-one entertainment system due to its built-in DVD player, making it a cost-effective option for many households. It launched with a library of exclusive games, including Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, Final Fantasy X, and offered backward compatibility for original PlayStation titles. Additionally, its competitive pricing and the later release of the more affordable “Slimline” model contributed to its long-lasting success. by @kogemu
