The history of the song Drain You and voting for the best performance 🫶🏻 Drain You became one of Kurt’s favorite songs, which he never tired of playing. The song was originally called Formula, possibly in reference to the formula substitute for baby milk, its lyrics reminiscent of the helpless love a child feels for its mother, but the song was most likely inspired by Kurt’s short but colorful relationship with Tobi Vail. The song’s opening statement, “I’m lucky to have met you,” was similar to what she said to Kurt. But the line of love in the song is not so serene, it hides the possibility of destruction, exhaustion and absorption by love, and in conclusion, an empty shell when this love comes to an end. “Drain You” was first recorded in April 1991 at the home of Melvins drummer Dale Crover in San Francisco. The recording included Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, who played bass, and Dale Crover. The newly formed group came up with the name The Retards, and recorded only one track, known to date - Drain You. The idea to record together came to Kurt’s head spontaneously; Kurt and Dave were on their way to the Nevermind recording in Los Angeles and stopped at Dale’s on the way. A recording from this session appeared on the compilation album “With the Lights Out” in 2004. True, the version from the collection is missing the first few seconds, in which the guys say - “We are Retards, and we are going to play for you!” Also on With the Lights Out, the song’s recording date is erroneously stated as 1989, when Debbie Shane, Dale Crover’s friend who engineered the recording, recalls it as being recorded in April 1991. 1,2. 🗓️ June 23, 1989 NIRVANA performs at the Rhino Records Westwood record store in Los Angeles, California, USA 🇺🇸 On this day, the first live performance of “Polly” took place (slide 4). There are three amateur video versions of this performance: - First version lasting 34 minutes - The second version lasts 24 minutes - Third version - 17 minutes In the first version, «School» is not included from the beginning. On version 2, which was shot from a chair above the audience, «School» is also not at the beginning and there are cuts between songs. Version 3, which was filmed from afar, has a lot cut out and only includes «Love Buzz», «Big Cheese», «About A Girl», «Sifting», «Spank Thru» and «Dive.» There are currently no photographs available from this concert, but it is said that a full audio recording of the performance was made (possibly from the mixer). Performance setlist: School • Floyd The Barber • Love Buzz • Big Cheese • About A Girl • Sifting • Spank Thru • Dive • Polly • Negative Creep • Blew I think everyone noticed that the first few slides are in noticeably better quality than the rest... Interviewer: Do you like doing covers? Kurt Cobain: We made a mistake with “Love Buzz” [on the group’s last LP, Bleach] because it’s our best song as far as I’m concerned. There’s nothing worse than when a band does a cover that’s better than the original. Basically we took the rim—the bass line—and rewrote that song. We stripped it down. The post features 10 covers from nirvana, which is your favorite? 1. Love Buzz - Shocking Blue cover 2. Where Did You Sleep Last Night - Leadbelly cover 3. Lake of Fire - Meat Puppets cover 4. 🗓️ May 26, 1989 NIRVANA performs at the Lindbloom Student Center, Green River Community College, Auburn, Washington, USA 🇺🇸 On this day, the first live performance of the song “Dive” took place. After “Spank Thru”, Krist Novoselic played a five-second jam on “Pen Cap Chew”. Radio station KGRG (Green River Community College) broadcast the concert ‘live’, so there is a possibility that audio from the mixer exists! A photo from this concert served as the cover for the NIRVANA - Blew (EP) album. 📄 Setlist: Dive • School • Love Buzz • Scoff • Sifting • Big Cheese • Floyd The Barber • Spank Thru • About A Girl • Negative Creep • Blew #nirvana #kurtcobain #grunge #kurtsmemento #davegrohl #rock #music #kristnovoselic #nevermind #nirvanafans #inutero #nirvanafanpage #foofighters #kurt #rocknroll #bleach #nirvanaforever #punk #pearljam #guitar #smellsliketeenspirit #seattle #kurtcobainforever #soundgarden #aliceinchains #cobain #kurtdonaldcobain #love #francesbeancobain #courtneylove by @kohbene
🗓️ May 23, 1991 🌎 «Jay Aaron Studios», Los Angeles, USA 🇺🇸 Photographer Michael Lavine 📸 The purpose of the photo shoot was for photographer Michael Lavine to take promotional photos for the upcoming release of the album «Nevermind». Filming took place at Jay Aaron Studios in Los Angeles. Robert Fisher (NIRVANA Art Director): It was my first time doing a photo shoot with them. I remember we had to send someone out to get a bottle of Jack Daniels and some weed. I said no one was going to smoke until we took a lot of pictures. I didn’t want all the pictures to be bloodshot eyes. Michael Lavine: «It was hot in the studio, it was very dark. Krist Novoselic and Butch Vig told me from the doorway: «Listen to this!» and they turn on «Teen Spirit.» I said: «Holy shit, this is the coolest song!» Kurt, who had been sleeping on the couch, woke up, hugged me, opened his mouth and showed his gums. We left the studio, ate tacos, took a bunch of photos. Kurt said, «Hurry up before I pass out.» | replied: «You look like crap, have some more whiskey!» He then drank an entire bottle of Jim Beam. #nirvana #kurtcobain #grunge #kurtsmemento #davegrohl #rock #music #kristnovoselic #nevermind #nirvanafans #inutero #nirvanafanpage #foofighters #kurt #rocknroll #bleach #nirvanaforever #punk #pearljam #guitar #smellsliketeenspirit #seattle #kurtcobainforever #soundgarden #aliceinchains #cobain #kurtdonaldcobain #love #francesbeancobain #courtneylove by @kohbene
🗓️ On May 22, 1992, Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love, along with Dave Grohl, attended the L7 concert at The Palace, Hollywood, California, USA 🇺🇸 This is the last available photo of Kurt in 1992, where he still had long hair. (He got a short haircut not long after that) Interesting fact: Exactly one year earlier, Kurt and Courtney had their second close encounter. This happened during the L7 concert at the Palladium in Los Angeles. Kurt was backstage drinking cough syrup straight from the bottle. In a twist of fate reminiscent of his first meeting with Tracy Marander and their mutual rats, Courtney opened her purse and revealed her own bottle of cough syrup, a stronger brand. They wrestled on the floor again, just like the first time, but this time it was more of a groping exercise than a physical test of strength. The atmosphere, according to those who saw it, was very “sexy” and private. When Kurt let her go, the tension eased and they talked about highly professional topics. Courtney immediately boasted that her band, Hole, had finished recording “Pretty on the Inside,” with producer Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth; Kurt was talking about his own album, which was still in the works. Kurt was usually meek when he first met someone, but in his attempts to impress Courtney, he pulled out every title and achievement he could - he clearly wanted to win her over. As Kurt soon discovered, few could out-talk Love. #nirvana #kurtcobain #grunge #kurtsmemento #davegrohl #rock #music #kristnovoselic #nevermind #nirvanafans #inutero #nirvanafanpage #foofighters #kurt #rocknroll #bleach #nirvanaforever #punk #pearljam #guitar #smellsliketeenspirit #seattle #kurtcobainforever #soundgarden #aliceinchains #cobain #kurtdonaldcobain #love #francesbeancobain #courtneylove by @kohbene
NIRVANA’s final performance with Chad Channing took place on May 14, 1990 at The Garage, Denver, Colorado, USA ❤️‍🩹 Unfortunately, there is no video of this performance, so let’s remember their other performances with Chad 🫶🏻 1,2,3. May 26th, 1989, Green River Community College, Auburn, USA 🇺🇸 15. July 18, 1989 - Pyramid Club, NYC, NY, USA 🇺🇸 Now let’s go back to May 1990... Nirvana played a show in Denver, capping off a US tour they began in April. By the time the band headed back home after the end of the tour, Kurt and Krist had little to say that Chad Channing didn’t fit in with the band. Nothing, of course, was said. But about two weeks later, they came to Channing’s home to notify him of his dismissal. Krist did most of the talking; Kurt barely said a word and spent most of the conversation staring at the floor. But even Chad was somewhat relieved: «I spent the last three years with these guys,» Chad recalled. «We went through hell together.» We went through troubles together, in small vans, playing without getting any money. There was no big daddy with big bucks to help us out.» Kurt hugged Chad goodbye tightly. Chad knew there was a friendship, but he also knew it was now over: «When we said goodbye, I knew I wouldn’t see them for a long time.» «I felt like I had just killed someone,» Kurt said. Chad took this meeting as if he had not been fired, but had left on his own. “We talked and I just told them, this is how l feel, and they knew it,” he says. - It’s not that we didn’t get along - we always got along, as human beings. But purely musically, it just didn’t work anymore. That’s when it ended, right there. I never felt like a full member of the group. I felt like I was just a drummer. I thought why don’t they just get a drum machine and be done with it. Then they could program it and do whatever the hell they want.” by @kohbene
📅 June 10, 1992 Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love buy an estate in Carnation, Washington, USA 🇺🇸 (houses where Kurt lived, part 2/14) A sign that the Cobains had decided to lead “something like a normal family life” was their purchase of an estate, or simply put, a country house in Carnation, a small community twenty miles east of Seattle, which cost them $249,000. Buying property seemed to be the smartest thing for Kurt to do after he became famous. This was the first property purchased in his life. The house itself was in disrepair, a tree was growing through it, and it needed serious repairs. 📝 Michael Lavine (photographer): “I was in that house one day. Kurt himself was there, Kevin Kerslake (NIRVANA video director) and Courtney. There was nothing there at all. Absolutely empty, there’s a Hotwheels circuit on the floor, boxes of rags from Europe, paintings, underwear, the kitchen is full of all sorts of snacks.” It is impossible to say exactly how much time Kurt Cobain and his family actually spent in this house. And for what reason was the decision made to move to a village whose population, according to the 1990 census, was only 1,243 people. Perhaps the idea was to isolate himself from everyone in general. On December 21, 1998, the house was transferred to the sole ownership of Courtney Love. And on December 7, 2000, she sold the estate for $402,000. At the moment, this estate is for sale and is estimated at $1,500,000 (you can see it on slides 5 and 7) 📝 Wendy O’Conor (Kurt’s mother): “He dreamed of going there and never returning. He loved being there with Courtney and Frances and maybe a few other close friends, growing vegetables and flowers, and playing a little for himself.” 📷 In the first photo: Kurt Cobain with his daughter, 1993. 🗓️ On May 2, 1991, in Van Nuys (Los Angeles, California, USA) at the Sound City recording studio, NIRVANA began recording its second album, «Nevermind». 📝 From the memoirs of Dave Grohl: «Sure, Seattle had its fair share of great studios, but there were rumors of a place in Van Nuys, California that had an amazing drum kit, a classic recording console, and (most importantly) a damn cheap place: Sound City.» Known for decades of legendary albums, this studio was a perfect fit for us with its gritty analogue aesthetic. Not to mention it was closer to Hollywood Geffen headquarters. I’m pretty sure they wanted to keep an eye on us to make sure we weren’t pulling off another big rock and roll scam, a la the Sex Pistols (something we were actually considering at one point) ... Once the dates were finalized (May 2-19), we began final preparations for our thousand-mile trip to Los Angeles. A few more rehearsals, a few more recordings of new song ideas, and we were ready to go. Well, we’re almost ready to go. We needed money for gasoline. We quickly booked a last-minute gig at a small club in downtown Seattle called the OK Hotel, hoping there would be enough money to fill our tanks and get us to Sound City without breaking down on the side of the highway.» As a result, the session lasted from May 2 to May 31, 12 days longer than planned. Recorded tracks: «Smells Like Teen Spirit», «In Bloom», «Come As You Are» (several versions), «Breed» (several versions), «Territorial Pissings», «Drain You», «Lounge Act» (several versions), «Stay Away», «On A Plain», «Lithium», «Endless Nameless», «Something In The Way», «Old Age», Song In «D», «Sappy» «Verse Chorus Verse». Houses where Kurt Cobain lived 🏡 (part 1/14) Wendy and Don Cobain, along with six-month-old Kurt, moved into this Aberdeen home at 1210 East 1st Street from nearby Hoquiam in August 1967. Cobain spent his childhood here, where he lived periodically until 1984. The one-and-a-half-story home was officially listed on the Washington State Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation’s Heritage Register, which preserves culturally significant buildings. The reconstruction of this house before Kurt’s family moved in was quite difficult, especially due to the tense relationship between Leland (Kurt’s paternal grandfather, slide 5) and Wendy, Kurt’s mother. The arguments between the two came to a head when Leland built Don and Wendy a stylized fireplace in the living room (slide 6) and installed new high and long kitchen tables, in the process he and Wendy fought more and more. Finally, Leland told his son to make Wendy stop picking on him, or he would leave and leave the job unfinished. “It was the first time l’d heard Don argue with her,” Leland recalled. “She complained about this and that and finally he said, ‘Shut your damn mouth or he’ll take his tools and go home! And she fell silent.» The current owners of the house are Lee Bacon and his wife Daniel. They bought the house from the Cobains in 2018 for $225,000. The Cobains’ original furniture remains in the house, and personal materials from Kim Cobain (Kurt’s sister) are being considered for the museum. This is the dining table, the mattress from Kurt’s bedroom, and the toddler bedroom set that Cobain and his sister Kim used. Lee: «Our goal is to make the house a tribute to Kurt’s youth and career, with museum-quality details.» By the way, Kim Cobain supports the idea of recreating the former appearance of the house and opening a museum: “I like to be involved and contribute. I am very happy and support Lee and Dani who have taken on this matter.” In the comments I will leave a short story about Leland, his behavior and an explanation of why he was very hot-tempered 🙏 by @kohbene
