There is one person I want to hold especially close in my heart today: my dear friend Maria, Danyil’s mother. So much has been written about Danyil — “Surfer” — the incredibly brave young man Ukraine has lost at only 21 years old. But behind the soldier, behind the husband, behind the hero everyone is mourning, there was also a son. Maria was his mother. She loved him, raised him and shared his childhood with him. Bali was part of Danyil’s life from the time he was a little boy. It was here, during the years he spent with his mother, that surfing became part of who he was — eventually even giving him the name by which so many people would know him: Surfer. Maria could not be in Kyiv to say goodbye to her son. I cannot imagine the pain of losing your child and then having to grieve from thousands of kilometres away. A mother’s love is not measured by geography. It is not diminished by divorce, shared custody, borders, or by who was physically able to stand at a funeral. She lost her baby. A part of her. Today, while the world remembers the soldier, I also want to remember the little boy his mother knew long before any of us knew the warrior. Maria, I see you. I see your grief, your love and the lifetime you shared with your son. I hope you know that you do not have to be standing in Kyiv for your place in Danyil’s story to matter. You are his mother. You always were, and you always will be. Rest in peace, Danyil “Surfer” Smyrnov. 🇺🇦 And may everyone who loved you — your mother, your father, your wife, your family, your friends and your brothers and sisters in arms — somehow find strength to carry this unimaginable loss. by @kolonitattoo
