2026 marks the 150th anniversary of Baekbeom Kim Koo’s birth. 🇰🇷

In “My Wish,” he dreamed of a nation that contributes to humanity not through military or economic might, but through the “sublime power of culture.”

Today, Hallyu is a global phenomenon. But does it truly embody that dream? Where does it stand in an age of platform algorithms, concentrated capital, and AI-driven homogenization? 🌍

Join us in Berlin, a city of division and reunification and a hub of Korean Studies and Hallyu fandom, for the opening of the 2026 Berlin Forum on Korea.

🎤 Keynotes

Won Dam Paik (Sungkonghoe University): Is Peace as Culture Possible?
Tae-Ung Baik (OECD): Korea and Hallyu in the 21st Century

💬 Plenary Dialogue, chaired by TaeGyun Park (SNU)

🗓 Wed, Nov 11, 2026 · 15:00–18:00
📍 Fabeckstraße 23-25, 14195 Berlin, Room -1.2009 (basement)

2026 marks the 150th anniversary of Baekbeom Kim Koo’s birth. 🇰🇷

In “My Wish,” Kim Koo dreamed of a Korea that would be “the most beautiful in the world,” one that contributes to humanity through the sublime power of culture, not military or economic might.

Today, Hallyu spreads across the globe. But does it truly embody that vision? 🌍
✦ The sender: Does Hallyu represent the depth of Korean culture?
✦ The receiver: What is Europe actually receiving?

Set against platform algorithms, concentrated capital, and AI-driven homogenization, this Forum holds up Kim Koo’s vision as a mirror and asks how Hallyu might grow from a commercial commodity into a Global Public Good.

📍 Berlin: a city of division and reunification, and a hub of Hallyu fandom and Korean Studies in Europe.

Scholars from Korea and Europe come together across history, cultural studies, media studies, political science, and philosophy.

Germany has felt a little closer to me through my connection with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation(@kas.korea). Seeing the Hangul calligraphy workshop at the King Sejong Institute Berlin reminded me that public diplomacy can begin in the simplest moments.
Learning Hangul, writing it by hand, and sharing our cultures with one another—that’s how meaningful connections take root. 🌱🇰🇷🇩🇪
Where will the next Sejong Culture Academy take us? Stay tuned for more stories from around the world!
