Do I have a source of inspiration? Or does inspiration really exist?
People often think that art or design only happens when inspiration comes. But for me, creation is the result of a process where discipline, knowledge, technical skill, and observation converge. I believe more in the power of the ‘idea’ than in 'inspiration' and, of course, in the power of hard work.
My mind is like Hermione’s bag, in which she stuffs everything and has no end; it is where my observations, research, concepts, and unfinished sketches reside. Much like the inclusive bag mentioned in Ursula K. Le Guin’s 'The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction,' I call mine my 'art dowry.' I keep the fragments I collect from life in this bag, waiting for them to quietly build connections and for their paths to cross. I am letting everything bloom in its own season. While I initially forced myself to rummage through that bag in search of magic, lately I have been searching for true magic not in the extraordinary, but in the simple texture of the mundane.
Sometimes drawing portraits, sometimes sketching an object that has been right in front of me all along, sometimes observing my cat or myself, or thinking about what emotion could describe a willow tree while walking... In short, everything with the potential to tell a story becomes the very material that goes into my bag.
See you tomorrow for the video where you will see these sketches come to life.
