New illustration! And yes... it’s another vampire piece. Will I draw something else next?
Maybe. Will it also have fangs? Probably. Shoutout to @swatchesacademy ‘s portfolio kit for the inspiration. Pretty handy resource if I do say so myself!

Can I just always paint vampires? This piece was made during the fantasy illustration course with @cearleyclint and @dianacearleyart at @swatchesacademy. I had a really great time there meeting new art friends and leveling up my skills.

Illustration done for the first project of @winonanelsonart ‘s mentorship at @smarterartschool. We’re halfway through the semester and already I’m learning so much. The goal for this one was to make an illustration in the style of Magic the Gathering. Thanks for all the help Nonie! I had a ton of fun on this and I’m very excited for the next piece!

Hello to all the new followers just tuning in 👋

I grew up on R. A. Salvatore’s drow elves, and I loved the contrast he explored between their striking elegance and the cruelty of their society. This is how I’ve always imagined a drow high priestess of Lolth. I had a lot of fun on this one. Hope you dig it too! 🕷️

And the final item in the artificer inventions series: Propulsive Boots. Designed to boost mobility, granting flight and increased movement speed.

For artificers who believe gravity is more of a suggestion…and are determined to rise to the heights of their often foolhardy, but well-intentioned aspirations.

A small box that tucks neatly into a pocket or pouch. Throw it on the ground and it deploys into a little buddy that absorbs incoming damage and, once hit, explodes to damage nearby creatures. A solid “oh shit, I need help” button for when your adventuring party find themselves in a bit of a pickle.

Surprisingly handy friend-shaped insurance.

Happy New Year, everyone! Continuing along with these artificer inventions (I’m almost done posting robot stuff, I promise).

Despite looking a little menacing, these scrapbots serve a mostly utilitarian role in the workshop. Adamantine claws, saws, and teeth let them cut, haul, and process scrap metal, while “eating” the debris exposes it to a super-heated arcane core that smelts everything down for reuse in later projects. It’s only a happy accident that they also hold their own in combat 😉.

Reduce, reuse, re-enchant.

Functionally, it’s a missile…it homes in on stuff and goes boom. Visually, the goal was to keep it from looking too modern by leaning into a variety of different materials and chunkier, fantastical shape language. I really enjoyed exploring the different options and pushing the shapes to hopefully land on something with a bit of character.

Continuing on, here’s a little automaton that skitters across the battlefield providing healing and movement-boosting effects. It originally started life as a fairly standard med kit, but I wanted to push the shapes into something a bit more unexpected, while still clearly communicating what this lil guy does from a gameplay perspective.

For this batch, I shifted the art style slightly to stay on track with the deadline, letting pen and inks do most of the heavy lifting. Turns out I quite like how the ink drawing stands on its own, so I’m showing those and the earlier concepts in the following slides.

Small robot. Big utility.

This little robotic construct provides essential mechanical (and emotional) support. It cheers you on, boosts morale, and (if absolutely necessary) weaponizes positivity. Nothing says “lethal efficiency” like a little robot companion screaming encouragement.

Going full heavy metal on this one with a tankier upgrade for all your artificing needs. I packed in extra mana cores (as one does) and enough arcane circuitry to make even a wizard a bit nervous.

For when your artificer needs to get the job done…and subtlety was never on the crafting table.

When I got the brief for this piece, I knew the concept phase was going to be a blast. Exploration and ideation can be time-consuming, but sticking through multiple iterations almost always uncovers a gold nugget around idea 6-12 (check the next slide to see the final 5 that made the cut).

One of the big challenges for this set of artificer inventions was making them feel like they all came from the same mind. I leaned on shared design language with a unified color palette, a “nuts-and-bolts” aesthetic, and circular mana-core motifs all to create that sense of consistency across the items.

Artificer-approved, probably safe to use.
